Multi Ripple Node(s) to selected Clips...

PostWed Apr 16, 2025 11:19 pm

Would love the ability to select multiple nodes in the node tree and ripple them all through to selected clips.

As I understand the node system on the Color page, there's no way to copy multiple nodes and paste multiple nodes? There's also no way to ripple edit more than one node at a time.

The feature request is really to be able to select a group of nodes and then paste them wherever needed. The ability to select multiple nodes and batch ripple them to selected clips that share the same fixed node tree would be ideal.

Well, there's a couple of workarounds:

1) if the nodes you want to ripple are later on in the node tree, you can right click in the Gallery and use "Preserve Number of Nodes (up to 10), and then only change the subsequent nodes.

2) you could ripple one node at a time -- say, node #12, node #14, and node #20 -- provided you have a Fixed Node Tree throughout the entire project. That can work.

Be aware all these global ripples are destructive (and not undoable), so when in doubt, duplicate the timeline and make the changes on a backup.

I've been doing one at a time. It works but it's tedious. Also, having to ripple immediately after a change is limiting. It puts the edit in a transitory state whereas a better copy / paste system would hold the changes in a way that allows the user to move around Resolve as needed before pasting any changes.

Many other apps that use nodes (most I can think of, including Fusion itself) include the ability to copy / paste nodes. It's an intuitive part of the workflow for many artists. The idea that the Resolve Color page node system doesn't have this really stands out to many of us and gets in the way of our natural instincts. I think for many of us having the ability to copy / paste nodes is more than a 'nice to have'. It's a core part of how we think. The debate, like so many other discussions about Resolve and its features and functionality, seems to revolve around long-time users (typically professional Colourists) who feel that users should adapt to how Resolve does things because it does this for very good reasons (often true), and then those of us who are not solely professional Colourists who use Resolve who expect a level of usability that compares to most other post production software we use (valid I think). I can't think of a good reason that fully warrants not including the ability to copy / paste nodes as needed in the Resolve Color page node system. I would agree that it could introduce complexity and it could break things if not used properly, but the same could be said for every other application that uses nodes and includes the ability to copy / paste. My vote is to include the feature and then let those that don't like it choose to not use it.

As far as I know, neither Baselight, Colorfront, Lustre, Mistika, Nucoda, Pablo/Rio, Scratch, or Speedgrade/Premiere can do this either. I gave you a workaround -- that's functioned for me for a long time. The key to me is to create and arrange the node tree in such a way that it's easy to change and ripple it (selectively) when necessary.

In some cases, Group Grades and also Node Stack Layers are two other features that will allow you to make "surgical" changes to multiple shots at once, without a lot of trouble.

Agree and appreciate the workflow tip Marc. It's something that works now and can be used effectively. That said, in my opinion and as a feature request, I think a fully functioning copy/paste workflow in the Color page node system is the best choice in terms of a modern node workflow and overall usability. Being able to target and pick nodes (either one or many) and then copy/paste them (much more intuitive than ripple) wherever needed would be great to have in the workflow. The Ripple workflow could continue as a Paste in Place option (for set node tree systems) where users can select a node / multiple nodes and copy/paste them to existing matching nodes in selected clips.

+1
I think it wouldn't be too difficult to extend the functionality of "Ripple Node to selected clips/group" to multiple selected nodes.
