When you say "group," do you mean Pre-Clip Groups and Post-Clip Groups, or do you mean something else?
If you truly have 500 groups, I think you need to come up with a more rational way to work. That will not fly with episodic work. I have used as many as 20 or 30 groups for some projects, but usually those grades are specific look for certain sequences. For the rest of it, I used a Fixed Node Structure, which is as simple or as complex as the situation demands.
There have been requests in the past to
alphabetize the drop-down Group menu with clips, but it hasn't happened yet. If I encounter a really interesting group grade, I'll save it as a PowerGrade to a specific bin, just so I can recall and use it on other projects in the future. So in that respect, the Pre/Post Group Grades are transportable.
