A Resolve 'Project File'

PostThu May 15, 2025 3:00 am

While I can see the benefits of opening Resolve databases via project manager, I really wish there was a way to open a project in windows explorer.

When trawling through old projects, I often times just want to open a project, copy a single node, then close it again. I wish there was a way to open a project without having first to connect it via project manager, then have to unconnect it again when I'm done with it.

In my mind, it would be a simple file, located in the Resolve project database. When you open it, it loads as an additional project in Resolve. When you close it, the file simply closes. No need to disconnect the database.

Rid your mind of the way other programs (like Adobe Premiere) work, and embrace the way it is in Resolve. Your life will be much simpler if you do that.

You can absolutely save a DRP (DaVinci Resolve Project) file every day as a backup if you want it, and in fact I do that frequently. I have a "Color" folder within the project source folder, with all the source files, XMLs, graphics, titles, and individual pieces. But the file I actually use is within the Project Manager... because that's the way Resolve works. That's also the way daVinci color programs have worked for more than 40 years. There are good backup/protection reasons why it's done that way, and some of that is covered in the first 50 pages of the Resolve manual.

This is really important now that we select the media folder when creating a new project.

Sounds like a job for "Dynamic Project Switching" (Too long to explain here; it is in the manual)

Yes, that is a new thing done in Resolve 20. I think that can work as well, and it just requires some thought and planning.

Right. Since I never needed to have proper folder structure prior to setting up my NAS, I need to find a good DIT structure now.

What you want is available in a roundabout sort of way. If you double click a .drp file from Windows, it will load that project into the current working database and open. When done, you can either leave it there or delete the project from that database. No need to connect/disconnect another database.

There’s a Feature Request for what you really want but it’ll probably never get done as it’s an end run around having to use the database UI.

While I understand why BMD added this feature, I’ve never been a huge fan of it, because it can give the incorrect impression to an inexperienced user that clicking on a DRP file “loads” the project, just like a Premiere .prproj file does.
