Visual Guide overlays

PostSat Jun 07, 2025 2:51 am

Hello DaVinci Resolve team,

Currently, the only way to obtain a rule-of-thirds grid or a simple adjustable horizontal guide is by importing a transparent PNG or applying the Grid effect to an adjustment clip. In both cases, the overlay itself draws my attention away as it loses focus when I’m aligning clips to the clip above it.

It would be fantastic to have a built-in, toggleable thirds grid under the Safe Area Guides (one that never renders), with simple on/off control and basic customization. Even just a default rule-of-thirds grid would massively improve my workflow. An adjustable vertical and horizontal line would also help significantly as overlays for cutting and aligning clips.

Thanks for considering this enhancement.
Med vennlig hilsen / Regards,

Real guidelines would be incredibly useful in DaVinci, ideally with snap functionality. I really love the solution in Affinity Photo.

I recently wrote a DCTL plugin that does exactly what you're talking about. It includes Safe Zones, Center Lines, Rule of Thirds, Golden Ratio, as well as custom guidelines, configurable grid, and aspect markers.
The plugin is completely FREE, so give it a try.
