Duplicate timeline command should increase version number

PostTue Sep 10, 2024 9:16 am

If you duplicate a timeline now, it just gets a " copy" at the end, which of course then has to be manually changed. If a timeline ends in a number, or perhaps even has a version number in it, like "timeline v0.2 JL", it'd be swell if Resolve's monster AI brain could detect that and just increase the version number.

I'm not entirely sure about this one.

In certain situations, for some people, this could indeed be beneficial.

Although I don't particularly enjoy having to constantly remove the "copy" from my copied files, it works consistently across most platforms, especially operating systems. When we copy a file, the word "copy" serves as a clear visual marker, making it obvious which file or element is the duplicate.

After the initial copy action, there's no room for confusion. This is a copy. If you choose to rename it, it's up to you to remember what it is later.

Using labels like 1, 2, 3, or A, B, C, etc., feels too specific and can easily get mixed up with other things, like file versions or timelines.

If this feature request is about changing the default behavior, I see it as a well-intentioned but misguided idea (just my opinion). However, if it's about offering a user preference that can be adjusted based on individual needs, then that’s a different story, I don't really care because it doesn't affect me.

I'll buy that. So the amended feature request is to have this as an OPTION in preferences. Heck, then you could even have a custom field; "if the following format is in a timeline name, increase version number" then you could enter v.1 or something like that.

Being able to customize it with a prefix and/or suffix (or none) is a good idea.

Without a suffix, we'll have : xxxxx 1, xxxx 2
With a custom prefix like V. : xxxxx V.1, xxxx V.2
With a custom suffix, C for example: xxxx 1 C

I'll add to that the ability to use %variable like we already have now. So someone could add a %date or %time as a suffix

Timeline, with the prefix "V.", the suffix "- %currenttime%", would make : Timeline V.1 - 10:20:05

variable.jpg
variable.jpg (10.73 KiB) Viewed 1583 times
<< as we have here, when someone starts with %, it gives a list of variable that can be used.

I don't see current time and current date, so it should be added in the general list

I just duplicate the timeline and delete the "copy" text and add "_v2" (or whatever) at the end, manually. Takes me five seconds.

I think there are much bigger fish to fry that the dev team should be looking at first.

Maybe Resolve could be the first NLE to do it?

I agree. I do it with a key on my streamdeck that duplicates then adds date+time suffix.

Relax. I could post the same comment on every single feature request in here. It’s an idea, a suggestion, not a command from on high. And clearly it’s resonating with people.

That’s clever. So, the command is duplicate, down arrow, hit return, wait 20 seconds to ensure the timeline has loaded because before that you can’t change the name, hit return, right arrow, delete four times, enter time and date?

Yeah, that’s pretty much the sequence, but don’t Enter to load timeline before renaming and it’s instant.

I use the Barraider plugin and sometimes combine with AutoHotKey, depending on what I need. I also have a AHK script that auto-switches my streamdeck to different layouts when I go to the different pages in Resolve.

Are you on Windows? The new file isn’t ready to rename on Mac and I haven’t figured out what keyboard shortcut puts the name in edit mode. But more importantly, it’s not instant for me. This is part of my frustration. It seriously can take 20+ seconds to duplicate a timeline. Doesn’t matter if it’s a cloud or local library, huge or tiny timeline. Sometimes it’s instant, usually it’s not. I’ve even toggled the preference to “load all timelines on open”, to no avail.

I will look into both of those!

Yes. If you want, I can msg you a StreamDeck profile if that would be useful to you. Hope you figure out your duplication slowness!

Sure, I’d love to check it out. I made a bunch of shortcuts but don’t use them much. Would be interesting to see what you have. Thanks!

How about if BM Dev team can change the behavior of what happens right after you duplicate a timeline? Eg: As soon as you duplicate "Timeline 1", the words "Timeline 1 copy" are highlighted and ready to be renamed directly, saving us a few clicks, a few types, and many seconds (multiplied by however many times we duplicate timelines during a project). Because let's face it, how many editors desire their duplicated timelines to retain the title "Timeline copy" or, god forbid, "Timeline copy copy copy"?

Would that make the majority happy? :D
