Please add Drag & Drop with Ripple feature in Timeline

PostThu Feb 08, 2024 7:01 pm

I'm a Professional Premiere Pro editor who is learning Resolve, and there is a feature I'd love for you to add in the next version please.

When I'm organizing clips on a timeline in Premiere, I can select a clip (or multiple clips), and drag them to any spot I want, and by holding down the Command key (Mac), I can drop the selected clips there, causing all the media afterward to ripple down the timeline. I use this feature constantly.

The closest feature in Resolve is "Swap" (Command Shift), but this is not the same thing. I've done my best to adapt in other ways using feedback from other users on this forum, but the functionality I need just isn't there.

Here is a brief Youtube video comparing the two features between Premiere Pro and Resolve.

Please add this feature to the next version of Resolve (holding down the Command key while dragging media to cause this ripple-insert effect on all media to the right).

Thank you

Please add Drag & Drop with Ripple feature in Timeline

I wish there were a process where BMD could take a suggestion like yours and, without too much fuss, get something done in a reasonable amount of time that would address the issue.

It might not be exactly what you’re asking as they do have to keep the overall integrity of the product in mind and guard against feature creep. That said, I think your ask is very reasonable and has been requested here many times before.

As far as I can tell it’s very unlikely this will happen though. First, BMD pretty much never responds to change requests. They don’t say if they think it’s a good or bad idea. They rarely even respond to issue reports to acknowledge there’s an issue or agree with some member that it’s user error.

What happens here is you make a request, one or more forever users tell you to stop trying to use Resolve as if it were another NLE, and a few newer people agree with you that it’d be a great change.

And that’s the end of it. Someday BMD may implement your request but there’s no way to tell how long it might take or if they’ve already decided they’ll never do it.

Select clip(s)
CTRL + X
Move playhead to place in timeline you wish to insert (with ripple) those clips
CTRL + SHFT + V

Works for me :) , but maybe there is some nuance of your workflow I don't understand.

I HIGHLY support this request. The dumbness that this works on the cut page but not on the edit page is only enhanced by the fact that ripple delete works only on the edit page but not on the cut page when there's a LOCKED music track present underneath the video track. This renders the speed editor useless as soon as you want to edit with music present and forces you to go to the edit page, but there you cant just drag a clip to any position you want, because of the lack of the drag and drop feature. ARGH! +

So yes, maybe you weren't aware but it actually does work as in premiere (even without pressing "option/alt") on the cut page, but not on the edit page. I just can't wrap my head around WHY!

Just wanted to help Jesse out with his issue. Mark's post is correct. You can cut material to the clipboard, then move the playhead to the insert location and paste with CTRL- (Win) or Command-Shift-V (macOS). Downstream clips will then ripple per Jesse's workflow request. So there is a way, but the ask to have a single modifier is useful, and we'll be looking at getting that in.

We are always monitoring the forums and many requests are reflected in the releases, so please keep the good ideas and suggestions coming.

Thanks! Wish there were a way to see which of our requested features have made it into a release. But it’s better to have them make it in unannounced than not make it in at all!

I was just trying to do the same thing (drag and drop with ripple) in Resolve (as I've been able to do for many years in Premiere) and saw this post...

Has there been any progress do we think?

Thanks very much

it would be tremendous for two things and to take a lesson from final cut pro, at LEAST have the option to turn on ripple insert by simply dragging clips from say V2 to V1 and so on or when deleting a clip on the main track V1 it'll ripple as well. again, turn on and off.

secondly, to have a film strip view for making selects in a two monitor situation where the left monitor would be all clips, film strip view, all in accordance with their clip lengths to quickly skim through and see all of the clip laid-out and not have to sift. this is especially helpful for fashion films, promo videos etc.

I really need this!

My current work around is drag the clip/compound/timeline from the media pool to the timeline viewer (program monitor) and a menu overlays, insert does the job. another work around is "paste insert" keyboard shorcut.
