Separate Mac Intel and Arm builds please !

PostThu May 29, 2025 6:28 pm

As apple is rapidly cutting intel mac support, with only the last round of intel models likely to be supported in in OS '26, it would be great to see Arm only mac builds now. Before the intel mac users go crazy, just supply them with Intel only builds. This would be like the current win intel / arm vers.

Why ? well the install size of the app alone with both sets of binaries in it has ballooned to 10gb for starters. :( second is also the large down load size. Both could be reduce by about 1/2, never mind install time.

This is currently (still) not possible, as a small percentage of the code is still Intel-based. Therefore, Rosetta is essential when installing DaVinci Resolve on new Macs.

are you a dev or BMD TS for Resolve to say that ? your statement is really mismatched things.

Rosetta 2 has nothing to do with this and it's not part of the app install. Rosetta 2 is part of the OS. Mac apps may include both ARM and Intel binary executables as part of the app contents / package. pure ARM code can't directly include intel code, but technically could call system API's that use it, but thats not the same thing as saying R includes intel only code running under Rosetta2. it's perfectly feasible to compile for one or the other or both. https://developer.apple.com/documentati ... cos-binary as starting point. Resolve could do something weird like have an external lib using Intel / Rosetta 2 but the time has come to make the break if thats accurate. Time to recompile / clean up & convert that lib as ARM.

Most of the resources which take space, are shared. You are not going to get much of a reduction.

Thanks for the response Rohit. was hoping it was a more significant reduction...

I am SO pissed I have to install Rosetta for — OF ALL THINGS — Resolve. Any company that can make a 17k camera that records to the cloud, should be able to make Resolve uninfected by Intel code... And this coming from a fan boy with 10s of thousands in BMD gear

We don’t make the dozens on codecs and other dependencies which are not universal binary compliant.
