Stabilize presets or copy/paste just the stabilize settings?

PostSun Aug 22, 2021 2:58 am

I process a lot of 8mm & Super-8 footage, and use [Stabilizer] on almost every shot.

I find the settings that I change to work best with this footage are:

CROPPING RATIO: 0.25 (DEFAULT 0.50)
ZOOM: Unchecked (DEFAULT checked)
TRANSLATION (DEFAULT Perspective)

These settings are best at minimizing the hand-held jitter of the common light-weight 'home movie' cameras.

If I don't set these before clipping individual clips, I'm in a world of pain having to change those three settings on each and every stinking clip thereafter.

I'd like to either be able to change the Stabilizer pre-settings globally for a project, or have a preset that I could just click before clicking [Stabilize]

Please...

Yeah, for some reason Stabilization is missing from the Paste Attributes UI, so there's no way to copy these settings in bulk. And even if you bulk select the clips, it greys out all the Stabilization options.

Maybe they did this because the Stabilize button needs to be clicked for each individual clip. But that shouldn't prevent it being possible to copy the settings for stabilization in bulk.

And I agree there should be some kind of preset system for Edit page effects, allowing saving common properties across projects. Fusion has a great system where you can save defaults for every single node, including plugin/OpenFX nodes. The same should be possible for both standard Edit effects, and OpenFX on Edit.

You can copy stabilization settings by selecting Paste Attributes-> Color Correction.
It's a bit buggy, when you paste the inspector will display the default stabilization settings, you must select some other clip and then re-select the clip to display the updated stabilization settings.

This will copy color correction also, so you must do this before any color correction is applied.

Ahh, thank you - didn't realise it was included under Color.

I definitely think it should have its own separate category though, both because the inclusion under Color Correction is very non-obvious, and for the reason you mention: you can't copy it without also copying grades.

BCC's optical stab is in node 1 of my "restore" preset tree, it maintains my chosen settings, and i find it preferable to the native for this application

i use this on doco's with archival footage that has not been through professional restoration, so better than nothing, not anywhere near as good as sending the clips (+ $) to a Phoenix system and waiting for six months

some days it's the better choice to get the show done. now.

in that case BCC is my option, along with it's scratch removal, DV fixer, rolling shutter fixer and a few others in the "restore" box

It's more a work-around rather than a solution. "Stabilization" is a strange type of "Color Correction"!
