Halation

Would love to have a Halation OFX available on Resolve, so we can emulate film.

+1 that works with color space awareness (the LOG material react differently that video encoded one)

This would be nice.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I don't like plug-ins. Native is better.

If you just need Halation (basically a light filtration/haze effect), then I would recommend Scatter. It's the best glow/halation plug-in I've seen (Mac OS only thus far):

https://videovillage.co/scatter/

I have zero connection with the company except as a satisfied customer. They are working on a full film emulation package as well, though I'm always skeptical of this stuff. I agree with Walter above that color-space aware tools are tricky to engineer.

Plugins tend to be slow (I had to re-do an halation by hand in resolve because the render of the fancy plugin used was 9 hours per reel, I dont know the name....).

Native will be integrated.

One license might be 100 bucks, but if you multiply for 100 machines it start to be a lot of money and the manteniance can be daunting, and times is money.

I had experience with plugins that worked one version and not the next...

Any solution that is “only Mac”, “Only window” does not do.... we have mix environment, mostly Linux.

Same here.

If a plug-in needs to be updated to work with a new version of the host, then we're stuck without the new features/bug fixes of the updated host, or not using that plug-in.

Neither is acceptable.

And then there are times when both host company and plug-in company each say a fix has to come from the other guy.

For me, plug-ins are a non-starter. Native is always best.

I am not a huge fan of third party plug-ins, I agree with Walter above. Native OFX are the way and I think having these OFX as part of the package would definitely be welcomed by most of the colourists using Resolve.

I am not a coder but I can't foresee this being a very complicated code to write.

No, I'm on a feature right now where we're using a Scatter ProMist filter (set to about 250) for every single shot in the entire film. It's all real-time, no issues.

Have not yet compared it to Halation in 17.4, but what I like about Scatter is it gives you emulations of about 20 different filters: ProMist, Hollywood Frost, Fog, Glimmer Glass, Hollywood Soft... there's a lot of stuff in there.
