Output Blanking: 2.2

PostFri Dec 31, 2021 9:54 am

Looking at the current list of Output Blanking options under Timeline
  • 1.33
  • 1.66
  • 1.77
  • 1.85
  • 2.0
  • 2.35
  • 2.39
  • 4.0
one has to wonder why the somewhat common option of
    • 2.21
is not available.

I'd like to see this small addition. 2.2 is a common middle-ground between standard wide-format 16:9 or DCI 17:9 and fully cinematic 21:9 aspect ratios.

Edit: "2.21" to "2.2".

There was a 2.20 aspect ratio for 70mm spherical films many years ago, like Lawrence of Arabia, My Fair Lady, and 2001, but not 2.21. I would say it's kind of an archaic format today, but that doesn't mean you couldn't work out the aspect ratio.

Brad Allen's Aspect Ratio Cheat Sheet doesn't indicate what 2.20 would be:

https://www.unravel.com.au/aspect-ratio-cheat-sheet

But based on what's there, we can interpolate that 2.20 would be exactly between 2.00:1 (which is very common these days) and 2.40. That works out to 1920x880. You always have the option to export in the actual aspect ratio and not a letterbox per se. Note that I don't believe DCI DCP's allow 2.20:1 -- you'd have to export in 1.85 and then matte it to 2.20.

2.00:1 was an aspect ratio championed by noted DP Vittorio Storaro for many years as part of his "Univisium" 3-perf film format. It never really went anywhere, but the aspect ratio survived and is now frequently used today by streaming channels like Amazon, Apple, Disney+, Hulu, Netflix, and Paramount+.

You are right, I mistook 2.2 for 2.21 somewhere.
It's a nice aspect ratio for when 2.0 is not "cinematic" enough, yet 2.39/2.4 is too wide. Also, 2.2 fits quite nicely on most modern smartphones. On my Note 10+ it basically perfectly matches the screen's aspect ratio.

Firstly thank you for your in-depth answer :).

The reason I'd like to see the output blanking option is due to the quirks of my workflow: The project will be at 16:9 with output blanking enabled. On the black bars data burn-in about the project, cut version, and clip will be displayed. For delivery one simply has to take the latest cut and clip the black bars; since Resolve's H264 and H265 settings suck we have to re-encode for delivery anyway and this way we at least don't have to do two DNxHR HQX exports (with and without data burn-in).
Without output blanking the only option is to put a PNG with in the top video track to get post-framing right. This results in the data burn-in displaying the information of the matte though instead of actually useful information of the actual video clip.

You can use this DCTL I made, if you want. Throw it on a timeline node and just type in the aspect ratio you want. I use it a lot when I have docs with some 4:3 archival that I want to all have the exact same frame, when the rest of the timeline is a wider aspect ratio. You can use it at clip, group, or timeline level, and it does the crop after size transformations.

the "blanking" choices are outdated: the simple DCP standard (2048x858) does not exist: if you use 2.39 you cut out a line.

let's trash this system and allow the user to input two numbers:

do you need 2.20/1? insert 2.2 and 1
do you need 2048/858? insert 2048 and 858.

simple and precise.

and please do not count the pixel form the monitor output sixe, but from the actual size of the image: 2048x858 blanking is ALWAYS the same blanking, regardless if I have 1920x1080, 2040x1080 or exporting the final 2048x858. now you have to modified it EVERY SINGLE TIME.

I gotta say, I think 2.00:1 is plenty "cinematic" enough for me.

We generally cheat and deliver 2048x858 and have never, ever had one kicked back from QC or a distributor (not even Deluxe). A couple of pixels ain't gonna kill anybody. We do deliver 4096x1716 for 4K as well. For home video, we make the math easier and just go to 2.40, which is 3840x1600 or 1920x800. They are very picky about side blanking, and we've gotten caught a few times for that, always a camera mattebox.

Thank you very much. This works like a charm and I love it.

This sounds like a very practical and relatively easy way to implement. I hope someone takes this into consideration at BMD.

Sure, a major studio release will have a spec sheet, and I always say, "if it's on the spec sheet... DO IT." At worst, we'll call and ask first and make sure it's OK/not OK.
