Stop Resolve locking media

PostWed May 11, 2022 11:55 pm

Some of our workflow involves a lot of pre-rendered graphics from After Effects.

Doing revisions like this is incredibly painful in resolve because you can't simply render over an existing file without quitting resolve so the file is released by the app and you can write/overwrite it.

The only workaround currently is to render multiple iterations (chewing up valuable storage) or quit Resolve to release the files.

Can Resolve trust that I'm grown up enough to manage my own media please?

+100

I updates assets (mostly images) very frequently sometimes just to see how it looks in resolve when everything is put in place. Or when I want to tweak something, and it never updates.

I would vote no. Locking files open in a program is SOP for the OS.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

But Resolve isn't altering the files!? Why would it lock them.

That might make any sense if it were actually required to write back to them at any point in the process but .... it isn't.

Not sure if this is related, but in the cut page sync window, if the camera dates are different (I don't always set camera dates) it will put a big black bar between clips so you cannot manually sync them. Was a HUGE headache back in the day. Now I only use edit page for multicam. But I think it has to do with clip locking. Like... just leave it alone BMD

You are just wrong here. File locking isn’t SOP, it is deliberate action from software side and can be removed by reading the data one is interested in and closing the file again. There is just about zero reasons to hold still image file handles open all the time Resolve is running.
I do stuff.
