Cinema Viewer Shortcuts

PostWed Aug 19, 2020 5:11 pm

This one's short and sweet.

I want every shortcut to work when in Cinema Viewer mode.

Version 17 has been officially released, and man what an incredible update!

BMD can't do everything we want in the "next version", so I wanted to bump this idea, which didn't make the cut for 17.

+1.... but...

I also want every shortcut that’s available on the edit page to also be available on the cut page. Probably a separate feature request, unless all cinema viewers are the same thing internally to Resolve.

Jim I'm sure you know this, but thought I'd mention it for others...

Every shortcut key works in Cinema Viewer ('Full View' key on the Speed Editor) if you put the Cinema viewer on a second screen and leave your Edit page up on the primary screen.

Just sayin' ...

I prefer to use just one, though, so this Request stands as 'not done'.

Still not working. For instance, switching focus from one panel to another doesn't work from Cinema Viewer. Why would I want this? In my old NLE I used to regularly switch to the Viewer, set ins and outs, and drop a clip to the timeline - all from Fullscreen mode.

Can't do this in Resolve - but (on a laptop) it would be nice!

I would love to use this for when I'm using dual monitors in fullscreen timeline mode. Being able to fullscreen my viewer and also keep my fullscreen timeline functioning would be ideal.

Currently when using the fullscreen timeline mode the Media Pool is forced open on the viewer display, and you can't close it for some reason. It would be great to be able to use the cinema viewer on that display while also maintaining my fullscreen timeline mode and being able to edit in it.

Is it so hard to fix? Shortcuts still not working when trying to edit in a dual monitor setup, one set to cinema viewer mode, and the other has the timeline. I figure they wanted to prevent people from making edits unknowingly while watching full screen, but that shouldn't be the case when we use a dual monitor setup.

(Resolve is awesome and it's incredible we can have it for free, and all...has to be put before my critisism ;) )

I'm pretty sure that, the way it's currently implemented, commands don't work in Cinema Viewer unless they're explicitly turned on.

I think it'd be better the other way around - but that's just my opinion.

I think you will find that Cinema Viewer is just that, a full screen viewer, and is a limitation of the Free version If you use the Studio version of Resolve you get Video Clean Feed which does give you full control.

Cinema Viewer Shortcuts

PostThu Mar 23, 2023 5:49 pm

The limitations of the Cinema Viewer aren't intentional but rather bugs. Plus, if one is on a single screen Clean Feed does you no good.

Here's an example that's clearly a bug:

Re: Cinema Viewer Shortcuts

The only problem with using Video Clean Feed is that it doesn't allow you to also use Full Screen Timeline mode at the same time. So your screen real-estate for your timeline is limited to half the screen, and you have a duplicate viewer above it as can be seen in Charles' photograph. This isn't a free vs studio issue, it's a legit limitation of Resolve's UI that is affecting paid users.

So currently it's impossible to have one monitor dedicated to just the timeline, and another monitor dedicated to just the full screen image, and also be able to edit with shortcuts. Simply not limiting shortcuts when in fullscreen mode would solve all of this.

Re: Cinema Viewer Shortcuts

PostFri Mar 24, 2023 2:01 am

Agreed. But they're not limiting them on purpose. It's a bug.

Of course I haven't seen the code but I'm pretty sure what's going on is the Cinema Viewer is written like another panel. So the keyboard focus goes to it and is no longer in the panel you were in before opening the Cinema Viewer.

If I'm right, that means a bunch of logic to try and forward commands to the panel your focus used to be in. Which is much more complex logic-wise than if the viewer were not implemented as a panel but rather as an output device - just like the clean feed.

Oh well. I hope they eventually manage to make it work properly - whatever model they choose to use.

The other thing that's harder - and doesn't work in the current implementation - is switching the focus to another panel. I used to do this all the time in my previous NLE. Go to the clip list and insert clips into the timeline, then go back to the timeline and edit - all running blind - I knew the shortcuts well enough to have no need of looking at the UI to do most things.

+1 completely agree [if this is request branch]

Because working with 2 monitors in (Dual mode + Fullscreen Timeline + Cinema mode) is really handy when you have ability to use hotkeys to Edit timeline on one monitor and at once see conctent on other diplay on fullsscree. And current condition feels more like bug and looks quite weird (becuase it feels like by default it should support timeline EDIT tab hotkeys)

Every time I get frustrated enough with Adobe and the **** they've been pulling on Premiere to give Resolve another try for professional editing, I run up against some trivial **** like this. Been waiting for three versions now, how hard can it be to have shortcuts working while you're in fullscreen on the edit page?! Another year of subscribing to Adobe hell :(
