A workaround: on occasions when we have to deliver 1.37 masters, we just correct full ap 35mm, and set the Timeline Resolution to 1920x1400, which is 1.371. (You could get to 1.3704 with 1920x1401, but I get nervous with odd-numbered resolutions.) Not sure where it winds up for 2K or 4K specifically. WB is one of the few companies I know that master all their classic pre-1953 films in 1.37.

The blanking in 16x9 HD basically works out to 160 on the left and 160 on the right, so if you had to deliver a 1.37 image inside a 16x9 frame, you'd set blanking to 160 for left and 1760 for the right. Note that when you get to older films (particularly silent films), sizing and aspect ratios get very complicated.

In the meantime, feel free to use my Custom Aspect DCTL. It lets you type in an aspect ratio and gives you either letterbox or pillarbox as needed. It can be used on clip, group, or timeline level. (It comes in handy when you have a film that mixes 4x3 and a wider aspect ratio.)

That works.

But I'd say we really only need one field. Because it's always a :1 ratio.

1.37:1
1.85:1
2.39:1
etc.

No it is not, it could always be something stupid and I prefer to punch in [2048]x[858] that give me EXACT blanking down to a pixel than punching [2.39]x[1] that is simply NOT teh correct blanking. (it will leave out two lines and it is diffusing another).

btw, 2048x858 standard theatrical blanking is:2.3869463869463869463869463869464

try to punch that.

Thanks, all!

I do manually set Left 1702.500 and Right 217.500 for 1.37:1, but it would be nice to see it in the list of timeline output blanking aspect ratios.

If you need specific pixel dimensions rather than a ratio, wouldn't it make more sense to create the timeline at that resolution, rather than use blanking?

The advantage of the ratio is that it would apply to all assets in the timeline, whatever that timeline's resolution.

Typing in pixel dimensions would eliminate that advantage, no?

Yes, final output is always pixel dimension but sometimes I have use for timeline output blanking in an HD or UHD timeline. Ultimately it would just be nice to have that option in Resolve.

no for multiple reasons..... not limited to what the client wants for final deliverable.
