Remove Snap of play head

PostWed Nov 16, 2022 1:19 pm

Could you please remove the snap feature to the playhead but keep the snapping when moving clips? or at least put it on 2 separate buttons. moving clips around and wanting to view what is in each clip is so hard to do constantly pressing the n key.

what i have do to do this is make sure snapping is off, check the clip, press n move the clip, press n, check the next clip, press n move the clip, press n check the next clip...

this should be the simplest thing to do in editing and davinci has made it so hard.

PLEASE change it so i (and others) can keep using davinci.

Thank you

+1!
While snapping clips together (or to a marker, or the playhead) is essential and constantly useful, I've personally never had any use for a snapping playhead, quite the contrary, it disturbs a good viewing and editing flow. SO having playhead and object snap inseparable is quite frustrating! Please allow for a toggle (like in the preferences panel of Premiere Pro for example) to disable cursor snapping.
Thank you for reading and for an otherwise incredible product :)

Also please make it optional that the playhead jumps back to the last visible frame when it's been placed beyond that and you switch back to that timeline. Super annoying!

Isn't the "N" command overriding the shaping temporarily?

Yes but if you could configure via User Preferences what you wanted snapping for, you would be using this a lot less and so could maintain a good flow. Or even better, combine this with switching snapping to a modifier key (and a User Preference to default snapping to on or off), that way you always know instinctively whether it's on or not rather than assuming one thing, finding it's the other and then having to press the N key, interrupting flow. Like Avid does it, basically - a tried and trusted method.

The main reason I'm using the current snapping toggle is because I mostly want snapping on for clips, and mostly off for the playhead. So customisable snapping would be great for me, I would need to use the toggle so much less.

When I use to edit on Final Cut Pro X,
Keep N key held down when dragging playhead, clip, in/out point disable Snapping : very very convenient
I liked this features a lot, I hop resolve will have it
Final Cut Pro X have it for the trim mode, blade mode ...
No menus, no préférences, very versatile and effective way of editing
Hope this help

Not liking this idea. A single "snap" feature that's either on or off is my preference.

I vote no.

Then have it as your preference, but at least have no objections to others having theirs for a smoother editing experience.

Here it is in Premiere - as a preference! And it's great, you should try it out.

Avid goes one further and has independent options for clip and playhead snapping. Hold down Cmd/Ctrl will reverse this temporarily, for a perfect and completely intuitive solution. I always know what I'm going to get!

Resolve's way is both clunky and confusing, I'm always having to toggle (since I mostly want snapping on for clips but off for the playhead) and always forgetting what the current setting is until it snaps when I think it's not going to, or doesn't snap when I think it will. And every time this happens it adds frustration to the editing experience.
