Clip duration

PostWed Jan 04, 2023 9:57 pm

I really like to see at a glance what the clip duration is on my timeline. I realize you can see it in Inspector>Video>Speed Change>Duration but I'd much prefer it where its easier seen.
Above the main viewer window, on the left we see the duration of the entire video and on the right the position of the player.
Perhaps it could be displayed on the left beside the video duration clock, as a static time showing the duration of the clip over which the player sits or plays past???

Hope that makes some sense. I'm a total newbie with Resolve, finally taking the big leap after learning the basics in Premiere Elements.

Until other mechanics are added, a couple methods currently available are:

1. Select the clip and hit Ctrl+D.

2. Place the playhead over the clips and hit F (Match Frame). The duration is on the left in the Source Viewer.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I’d like to to have a tooltip showing the duration when hovering the mouse over the clip. That’s what Premiere Pro is doing and it’s very useful. You get the full clip name, timeline position in and out, clip duration.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Thanks Jim. That helps some for sure. I agree with Robert though as that's what I used to see in Premiere Elements too...when hovering the mouse over the clip, a small popup displayed showing the clip name and duration.

To add to Jim's suggestions:

3. Select the clip and hit X (to mark it). The duration is shown in the Timeline viewer top left.

You can do this for any range that you mark with I and O, or by selecting multiple clips and pressing Shift-A.

Having said that, a contextual popup right where your mouse is, with relevant clip info would definitely be a nice quality-of-life addition.

And why? Works very well in Premiere Pro.
It’s not displayed immediately only when you let your mouse rest over it.

+1!!!

We really need a quick and convenient way to see the length of a clip (whether by context menu, hovering/clicking, with or without option keys, display after selection, selection and shortcut, or whatever. Please! Pretty please!

That's what the Edit Index is for.
Look at Record Duration and Source Duration

I found it distracting there. I prefer Resolve not doing it.

The Edit Index is not adequate for the purpose in question. First off, it's not even visible in smaller screen configurations. And on our 3 monitor setup it's just tedious to keep locating.

I believe quite a few users would like to see an option here.

It does exactly what the OP wanted, show you instantly the full duration of a clip. The Edit Index is one of the most important but underated tools Resolve has to offer.
Sure some people may want some info directly on the clip, but the reality is BM will probably not add this feature if there is already a really easy way to get there.

The Edit Index is incapable of displaying multiple clip selection duration.
I wich DV had a simple feature like FCP where the selected clip (or clips) duration is always displayed, in yellow, above the timeline, next to the timeline name.

You can also MODIFY that duration by hitting CMD-D...

Very useful for example when doing time-lapse using series of stills, allowing you to quickly chang the duration of each image to 1 frame.

I have to say, there's a lot of room in the main Timeline Viewer and in the source Viewer, and you'd think there'd be room in the gray bar for the clip duration timecode (maybe switchable to other modes, including off).
