Missing Font Warning

PostMon Oct 07, 2019 6:15 pm

It would be useful if Resolve would throw up some kind of warning at the very least when opening a project that uses fonts not available on the system.

The ideal scene would be a dialog that allows us to choose which font to use instead, and to choose whether that replacement is permanent, or only for that editing session. (If the latter, then the project would attempt to use the original font the next time it's opened.)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Seconded. Any warning is better than the mysterious failures and bad renders we get now.

Personally, I’d rather it were handled similar to missing assets.

I wonder if the missing font problem is being considered for improvement?

I've just opened a new general thread for documenting "silent" failures like this:

Version 17 has been officially released, and man what an incredible update!

BMD can't do everything we want in the "next version", so I wanted to bump this idea, which didn't make the cut for 17.

I am not sure what coding hurdles I am proposing but what about an industry leading “manager” that shows the font called for in the AAF/XML and then whether that font is on the system and what font is substituting?

And, not sure of it's doable because of distro inconsistency, but user-installed fonts don't work in Ubuntu ... you have to manually install them as system fonts (i.e. Resolve sees fonts in /usr/share/fonts but not ~/.local/share/fonts). I believe this means going through the official system font manager rather than hardcoding a path, but I'm not 100% sure if that stays consistent across distros ... and I get that Ubuntu isn't the officially supported linux flavour.

Especially in Fusion.

The whole node tree is broken even when all the media is there, and the only clue to where the error is occuring is how the nodes that are using a missing font turns red... but no dialog appears to indicate that a new font needs to be selected to work.

I was going crazy troubleshooting in this one instance when by chance I changed the font and boom, everything came back to being functional.

Would have saved me time if Resolve "resolved" the issue for me and told me that the original font used in one of the nodes is not available.

OMG! I had this exact experience yesterday - moved a project to another machine and couldn't work out why the Fusion elements were not working.

Font management is still a big issue for me.
Which font gets substituted without warning is a lucky-dip.
I wish, on startup, it gave a display showing missing fonts, missing media and missing plug-ins?

I'm still baffled why sometimes a font won't show up in a Text title, but will show up in a Text+ title.

As a (hopefully temporary) workaround—I've preemptively started listing out, in the "project notes" window, all the special fonts I've used by name; so whenever I switch systems or send to someone else, they can just see it listed there.

It would be nice to have, and it's been a feature in competing software for years.

This is a "production killer" issue. Not being sure what fonts are being used in a collaborative pipeline, means I cannot be confident to be delivering the film my client wants. PLEASE PLEASE can someone at BM have a look at this.

yes, especially nowadays, with BM cloud, changing clients are getting even more prone to this problem...
shared raw footage is one thing, but fonts a completely different challenge, since it's handled by the operating system, not by Davinci...

so PLEASE make at least a BIG warning and LIST of used fonts in a project!
better would be a .ttf file export feature, to pack it into the project folder...

Just from a legal point of view, font packaging is not great ... and does not solve the problem between OSs. Resolve is amazing at finding lost media. It is pretty essential that it does same thing for fonts.

I think that IP laws would prevent repackaging fonts. It will likely be something the user needs to acquire themselves but a list of what that is would be very helpful.

It took me a while to realize that fonts were the problem when I opened an old project and the text clip were just solid black.

But even when I finally got it and installed the correct font it wouldn't show up, even after a restart. So I had to go to the Text+ clip and click on the style menu under the font menu (it has no name, but has entries like "regular", "bold" etc.). And as soon as I hovered over the style options the clip became visible again.

I have setup a test BM project server to see how it works.
I can confirm that, unsurprisingly, there is no font error window from the server projects.
I just don't get how one can collaborate on projects in the current, very fluid world of video production, without a font checking function.

+1. I know there's a warning in the console for Text+ titles, but something more prominent would be nice, especially for renders.
