I actually use a Magic Trackpad on the left side of my keyboard, while I use a Wacom pen/tablet or mouse in my right hand, and it's super useful, ergonomically speaking, to be able to use the trackpad for quick UI navigation. Not being able to use it to zoom on the timeline is a major bummer.
I have a Magic Trackpad 2 with macOS 10.14.6 and I just use Option + two-finger scroll up/down, or left/right. Up or left = zoom timline in, down or right = zoom timeline out. It's quite a smooth and quick zoom in most instances.
Is it the pinch zoom that people want specifically, or are the above not working for you?
I use
Better Touch Tool (hugely recommended to any macOS user, especially those with Magic Trackpads of any kind) as my all-in-one utility tool, for keyboard shortcuts, expanding the functionality of the Trackpad, clipboard history/screenshotting, etc.
Using that I've also bound (for Resolve only): four-finger swipe up = Shift-Z (ie, zoom timeline to fit). I find that quite useful. There's probably some other trackpad gestures I will think of to add in time.
I can't see how BTT could be affecting my ability to do two-finger swipe up/down/left/right zooming of Resolve. But it could be your macOS Trackpad settings perhaps? I have most of the advanced stuff turned off because I have them configured in BTT instead (where there are far more options, and customisability):
I'm wondering whether you have "Swipe between full-screen apps" set to two fingers, which I could imagine might interfere with your ability to use Option + two-finger left/right. Not sure if that'd affect up/down, but maybe some other setting is blocking that.
