Timeline Trackpad Pinch Zoom

PostFri Oct 18, 2019 10:52 pm

Requesting to be able to zoom in and out of the timeline by pinching and un-pinching from a trackpad i.e. on a laptop.

+1

I'm honestly surprised more people aren't clamoring for this. I actually use a Magic Trackpad on the left side of my keyboard, while I use a Wacom pen/tablet or mouse in my right hand, and it's super useful, ergonomically speaking, to be able to use the trackpad for quick UI navigation. Not being able to use it to zoom on the timeline is a major bummer.

I have a Magic Trackpad 2 with macOS 10.14.6 and I just use Option + two-finger scroll up/down, or left/right. Up or left = zoom timline in, down or right = zoom timeline out. It's quite a smooth and quick zoom in most instances.

Is it the pinch zoom that people want specifically, or are the above not working for you?

I use Better Touch Tool (hugely recommended to any macOS user, especially those with Magic Trackpads of any kind) as my all-in-one utility tool, for keyboard shortcuts, expanding the functionality of the Trackpad, clipboard history/screenshotting, etc.

Using that I've also bound (for Resolve only): four-finger swipe up = Shift-Z (ie, zoom timeline to fit). I find that quite useful. There's probably some other trackpad gestures I will think of to add in time.

I can't see how BTT could be affecting my ability to do two-finger swipe up/down/left/right zooming of Resolve. But it could be your macOS Trackpad settings perhaps? I have most of the advanced stuff turned off because I have them configured in BTT instead (where there are far more options, and customisability):

I'm wondering whether you have "Swipe between full-screen apps" set to two fingers, which I could imagine might interfere with your ability to use Option + two-finger left/right. Not sure if that'd affect up/down, but maybe some other setting is blocking that.

No pinching is terrible! That and the weird fullscreen behavior make Resolve feel out of place on macOS.

I've used BetterTouchTool for over a decade, but can't figure out how to get it to allow pinching to zoom in Resolve. I can get it to happen, but only once, so that's no better than a keyboard shortcut. Has anyone actually solved this?

Just wanted to add another related wishlist to this thread.

I'd like to see the ability to easily scrub timelines using simple trackpad gestures.

I use a Magic Trackpad on the left side of my keyboard, so can use my left hand to quickly scroll and navigate UI things that are a bit awkward to do while holding a Wacom pen/tablet in my right hand. It's such a great setup, and really helps to reduce RSI.

Premiere Pro lets you smoothly scrub through a timeline by swiping with two fingers on the trackpad, when the cursor is over the Viewer. It's fantastic.

I'm honestly surprised at how poor Resolve's trackpad support is, given how aggressively the product is marketed to low-budget content producers who may only have a laptop to work off of.

My guess is that they also don't have a budget for a Mac, so they don't have a good trackpad.

As this thread has been bumped I'll add that I was wrong in what I said earlier; I am finding the current method of trackpad zooming (Option + scroll) to be increasingly annoying, because it's so jerky and imprecise.

+1 from me for proper pinch zooming, and better trackpad gestures in general.

I also support full trackpad. I love Davinci and prefer it to FC or Premiere by a long shot.

This seems like a glaring ommision on their part. I sure hope they put this into 17’s full release.

Just give us a window where we can assign actions to gestures, for example zoom, timeline scrubbing, timeline scrolling.
Two finger gestures would be good (pinching and swiping), options for three and four finger swiping would be even nicer.

I imagine there is a good number of people who don't want to switch to Resolve because of the lack of gesture support.

It's amazing that this function has not yet been activated in Davinci with the trackpad

+1 please implement this. Using Resolve's timeline feels without pinch to zoom so dated compared to any DAW in music world.

This would be cool. Seems like we could be making a lot more use of the trackpad in general. I'd love to hear what else people have set up with bettertouchtool.

+1 I'm not sure why this isn't a standard feature in every NLE on laptops let alone Resolve. It just makes sense if you don't have a mouse. The good aspects of FCP should be copied from as much as possible.

Pinch to zoom on iPad and Mac would greatly improve the editing experience. Final Cut for Mac and iPad have it, as does Luma Fusion.
