Button for Viewer Channels

PostSun Dec 08, 2019 11:16 am

Hi.

Simple request, maybe others find this helpful, too:

Is it possible to have a little dropdown menu in the color page viewers to select the viewer channel (R,G,B)? I know I could assign keys, (and I know about the splitter node) but same as the masking options and wipe mode, a little icon with a dropdown, much like the timecode display, could be helpful or speed up workflow in some occasions.

Fusion has it, so it shouldn't be too hard to implement.

Thanks

I think the Resolve user manual should be your first place to look.

Thanks for the hint, but up in the menu was the first place I found them (and of course in the manual, which I look up first before posting questions naturally).
Most other buttons which are on top of the viewer (wipe, mask, …) are also accessable through the menus and still have a separate button.
Fusion has this button on top of the viewer, so it should be easy to put it also on top of the color page viewer.

I'm not sure if Windows has similar functionality, but on macOS, you can assign/remap keyboard shortcuts for application menu items, so that you don't even need a button to invoke those features. Most users of VFX apps like After Effects, Nuke, Fusion etc use keyboard shortcuts to toggle RGBA channel views, as its much faster than clicking a button.

There are no shortcuts for this menu item. Update: I'm wrong. They are just hard to find!

There are no shortcuts assigned, but you can assign them yourself in the keyboard customization in the top menu. Right now I assigned F5 for RGB, and F6, F7, F8 for R, G and B respectively.

But as I understand this section of the forum, it is not to find ways how to handle stuff different, but for feature requests.

So is my request a valid one? I think yes, because we have exactly this button on the Fusion page on top of the viewer, three little intersected circles, and when you click it, you can choose R,G,B and even A.
(Not able to do a screenshot on this computer, so I can't provide a picture)

I do agree that there does need to be an obvious visual indicator that the Viewer is only displaying a specific RGB channel. Personally, I prefer a more obnoxious approach, where the Viewer window is framed with a color outline matching the currently selected channel. That way there is no ambiguity about what is currently being seen in the Viewer.

Right now, I see the larger problem with the fact that there isn't a clickable icon for RGB channels is that you can't tell at a glance that the Viewer might be displaying an individual channel, other than the fact that the picture is grayscale.

There already are icons in the Viewer for displaying the activation states of Highlight, Split Screen and Image Wipe, so that would be the obvious place to add an indicator/selector for RGB channels.

There's no that item.
Was it removed in version 17?
Then what should I buy?

Have a look in the Viewer panel's three dot Options menu (not the 'View' menu)... can't say for sure when it moved, but that's where it's found in v18.1 and v18.5.

That's what it means to read the manual :)
Thanks :)
