Option For Disabling Playhead Snapping

PostTue Dec 17, 2019 3:20 pm

As a former PP user, I am sure I'm not alone with this one.
I've also found a reddit thread about this topic from about a year ago.

What I'm requesting is an option to disable the playhead from snapping when scrubbing, while the clips still snap to each other and to the playhead. It is ok for clips snapping to other clips and to the playhead.
But when moving the playhead itself it would be very helpful if there would be a way to disable snapping, as snapping makes it impossible to just scrub through the timeline.

For now I'm using a shortcut to enable/disable snapping (generally disabled and enabled when moving clips), but this could be way more efficent with the option to disable the snapping of the playhead itself.

There's a scrub tool under the monitor which doesn't engage Snap.

It's also very easy to disable it with the N key.

I would vote against this one.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thanks for your tips Jim.

I've tried the scrub tool under the monitor and it is not very intuitive for editing and zooming in/out is not possible.
I'm pressing the N key every few seconds while editing, because I'm constantly scrubbing through the timeline and arranging/rearranging clips.
If there is another way handling this, please let me know.
Maybe I'm too used to PP still. But the way PP handles the snapping feature seems more practical to me compared to DR.

Maybe 3 functions by N+modifiers. N toggles on/off. One modifier snaps clips and playhead (current default behavior). Another modifier snaps only clips. The final modifier snaps only playhead. Icon on timeline shows current setting. Again, N simply toggles these on and off.

Yes, that would be great.

I have the same problem. I tried to move from Premiere Pro to Resolve and this is the only one feature why I didn't do it yet. It would be great to have an option to disable playhead snapping.

Hey guys,

I will have to agree on that one.

It seems to be a really easy feature to integrate.

In PPro if snapping is "on" then you just have to maintain "alt" key to disable it for the action you are doing.

For exemple you are shortening a clip triming the "out point" with snap "on" and don't want your "out point" to snap with audio. Only thing you have to do is to maintain "alt" key and you can trim your video exactly where you need it without snapping.

Please could you add this feature in next update ?

Thanks,

Isn’t keeping pressed “N” temporarily disable teh snapping?

yes, but pressing N anytime I want to disable snap for moving playhead is really annoying. It would be better if there will be an option to disable playhead snapping permanently (only while scrubbling of course) .

Yes, please.

I would like to move from Premiere Pro and this is slowing me down really.

Constantly pressing "some" key when I want to move my playhead.

In most cases, I can't move with playhead a little bit due to the aggressive snapping. I have to press N key to move somewhere and find a wanted clip. Then I want to move the clip and I have to press the N key again to place it in the right position in between clips. It's nonsense. And after 2sec again and again.

I'm thinking more about snapping than creating. Thank you for changing this.

I would also love for more snapping settings to be added to Resolve!

I'm trying to switch over from PP and I've done around 4 major editing projects in Resolve now, but the snapping playhead and the snapping "harshness" when I move clips around is really annoying. It doesn't feel natural and I constantly need to press n or zoom in to get the clip or playhead where I want it to be.

Right now I'm going back to PP because I feel my creativity is slowed down by this problem. I want to be able to try 10 different things in a few seconds, and this is currently impossible with Resolve. Sad, because there are so many things that I love and are much better than PP, but a natural editing flow is most important.

As another user coming from PPro, I am struggling with exact the same problem!
An option to deactivate the playhead's snapping while preserving clip snapping would be amazing!

Interestingly if you scrub with the jog wheel on the Speed Editor it ignores snapping entirely. I would imagine the same applies with the Editor Keyboard.

I have been using DaVinci for a few months now, and the snapping is the one feature I still find incredibly annoying compared to PP. Please add this functionality and add "Shift" toggling that I can use to quickly activate on and off while moving things around. This shift functionality already exists when moving, say, a video track from track 1 to track 2 but doesn't work for snapping playhead and things of that nature while moving a clip in the same video track.

Thanks,
Devin

Premiere gives us an option to disable playhead snapped when snap is enabled. This would be very welcome!

Working on long timelines I frequently find myself either zooming in and out or disabling/enabling snapping just to position the playhead closer to a cut.

Snapping can be temporarily disabled while you're click+dragging by hitting N. It will re-enable once you let go of the left click. I've only just noticed that it wiil only do this while the TimeLine in the active 'focused' panel - but if you drag from the source viewer into the timeline then it won't work because the source view remains the focus. I'd call this a bit of a bug.

We know, and having one control that toggles snapping on both playhead and clips at the same time is really unhelpful. I'm always having to disable it since I don't want the playhead to snap, then re-enable because I do want clips to snap.
