Data Burn In Logo Resize Toolset

PostThu May 14, 2020 1:10 pm

Occasionally I need to "Watermark" exports with a lower right corner image. I would love if a sizing tool was added to the Three Logo Data Burn Ins. That was I could resize an imported graphic and then use the positioning tools already available to place it where I want it.

Not sure this would offer sufficient benefit, seeing as you can already do this by adding the logo to the timeline.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

That's how I'm doing it currently. However, I wouldn't mind the data burn in aspect due to wanting to get rid of that track every time in the timeline on the color page so it doesn't pop up in Fusion if I need to go to to Fusion and when I need to color grade the footage beneath the watermark. It's just a hassle that I think could be resolved by allowing it as a data burn in feature with simple resizing tools.

Wouldn't it make sense to add the watermark as a very last step?

I'm not sure this one is worth BMD spending limited resources on. I'm not seeing it add anything we can't already do, or even making the task any easier.

One use case is if you use output blanking. You're not able to add an image and have it placed in the blank bars. Data burn in is the only way I'm aware of to have anything in the blank bars (without creating the blank bars in a different manner).

Data Burn In Logo Resize Toolset

PostThu Mar 18, 2021 9:05 am

Hi
We are using the logo data burn in as a watermark all the time.
Its true there is no sizing for it but as a workaround we just create a png file with the logo in the right position and size.
We save those on the server so all machines can see them. We also have a preset output with the right burn in.

We always need to export a version with a watermark and without for the broadcasters so this saves us a lot of duplicated timelines and mistakes.

The only thing is that this burnin slows down the render significantly. 20% of the normal speed. this doesn’t change between machines with different GPU's. I haven’t tried different files other than png though.
We usually run them over night so it doesn’t matter so much.

+1 to the OP's request for a way of scaling a custom logo in the data burn-in tool.

I had the same question as to why I could not just resize my Logo from within Data Burn In.

Jim Simon and iddos both make excellent points above though.

I am new to Resolve and using their feedback above, instead of using Data Burn In, I grabbed my logo and dropped it on the timeline. From there I sized and positioned as needed. Easier than using the Data Burn In I think.

But as iddos mentioned, render times did improve significantly for me, which is a great win. About 20-30% faster compared to using Data Burn In. YMMV, of course.

Our (very cheap) workaround was to have a full-frame logo, then export a "tiny" version of the logo only used as a data-burn logo, in the correct position. I agree, that's not as good as having actual resize controls in that palette. I have to check to see what Frame.io does with their custom burn-in.
