Able to close a project without entire Davinci shutting down

PostSat Jun 06, 2020 1:32 am

Right now, if you have one project open, and you close it, the entire Davinci Resolve software shuts down.

Every other software I've used, when you close a file, the program itself remains open allowing you to open another file.

I realise there are workarounds which I myself use, but it'd be good if Davinci Resolve can adhere to standards that new users are used to.

If you open the Projects page by clicking on the Home icon (page bottom right), then right click on the currently open project, you will get a dropdown menu which includes a Close option. This leaves Resolve running. A bit convoluted, but at least the option is there.

If you want to go to another project you don't have to close the currently open one first. Just select the Projects page and double click on the one you want to open. You will either get the option to save the current project, or if it has already been saved, Resolve will switch to the newly selected one.

The requested feature already exists. All we really need here is a Close Project option under the File menu.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

The menu will not be open if there no project open, in other words, what the behavior you want: [close project and go to project pane] or [close project and open a new one unnamed]?

The expectation would be to have the interface, but no project.

Close and go to the screen that comes up when you freshly boot the application. I do agree that this is not as intuitive. Not that you can't figure it out and work with it, but a "Close Project" option in the file menu would be... appreciated. It would at least be less button clicks, and of course it could be keybound out of the box.

yes that would be a solution, close the project and go to project manager.

there is in beta 17 a [close project] under the [file] menu, but it does not seems to be active at all (always grayed out)

I think that ''close' menu option is only available when you have more than one project open at the time.

Options are on right-click.

The project manager is great, however a menu option from within the program would be helpful.

This looks familiar...2o mins searching for something to no avail...and then here's the answer. Once again, it's Charles. You're pretty much my personal Davinci coach at this point. :D

Thanks, John. I don't always get it right though, and there are things in Resolve that I don't use such as the Cut page and Fusion, so can't answer questions on those. :)

This now happens in Davinci Resolve 19, I cannot right click outside of the Project Manager window when it's open. Anyone else have this issue? It's not totally broke, but is annoying that when I close a project, the program shuts down and I have to restart it.

Yeah, the Resolve 19 Project Manager is a non-modal dialogue box: you can't do anything outside when it's up.

But: I just selected the listing for the project in the Project Manager, then right-clicked and selected "Close." That project did close and I got an Untitled Project.

I think what some people are asking for is: can we launch Resolve and not have an Untitled Project? I think this was the design methodology some years ago, and it doesn't bother me -- I just ignore it and open or close what I want. I get that it's unusual to launch a program and have it force you to have an open project of some kind.

Sooo, now this is weird. Yesterday, I opened a project, did a little work on it, thought maybe I would try to close it, and voila! My Project Manager window appeared along with an Untitled Project in the background AS IT SHOULD! I wonder why for 3 days I couldn't get it to close a project without shutting down Davinci entirely. Don't know what happened, but, I'll take it!
