Custom thumbnails for Project Manager

PostMon Jul 13, 2020 4:07 pm

It would be great if we could set a custom project thumbnail for viewing them in the Project Manager window.

At the moment the random way it is handled more often than not tells you very little about the project, and just as often you'll see a big red media offline, even when there's no media offline.

Considering we can already make custom thumbnails for clips in the Media Pool, it would be very helpful to do this at the project level, and would make the Project Manager look a lot less messy in the process.

The process isn't totally random. The first 5 pieces of media you add to the Media Pool are the sources of the 5 thumbnails used in the Media Manager. If you want specific thumbnails you can grab stills from your media files and save them as images, then import them first into your project, they will become what Resolve calls Poster Frames. I made a video going over this. The process could be made easier in my opinion, but you do have some control over it now.

RTX-3060 12 GB | Resolve Studio 18.6.6| Fusion Studio 18.6.6

Thanks, that's most helpful.

You're right though, there's still a bit of jumping through hoops to get it to do what you want, when a straightforward "right click > save as project poster frame" would do the trick.

+1

I have a lot of projects where, by happenstance of how I imported footage, have bizarre, nonsensical thumbnails that don't help at all.

Also, since a lot of my work goes to YouTube at the end, it would be great if I could set the Resolve thumbnail to the thumbnail created towards the end of the project. Needing to be prescient about it kinda sucks.

Same issue with Fusion compositions in projects. Because of the awful way Fusion was integrated into Resolve, textures and other assets pollute the Media Pool so the thumbnail can easily be a texture of something a long those lines and it may not even be in use. It's a little more complicated but, maybe Resolve should occasionally save some frames from the viewer so it can be more representative of the edit or comp.

Hi,

+1 for a "Save as project poster frame" option. That would be very helpful.

Kind regards.

I would first ask that those thumbnails actually work before any calls for them to work differently.

The bulk of mine are typically blank.

Right click>Set Poster Frame applies to clips...in a bin. It doesn't apply to Project thumbnails in the Project Manager, which is the subject of this Request.

+1 I use a project template that includes some media I use across multiple projects. So as you might guess, every project thumbnail is exactly the same. Being able to change it without going through hoops would be apprecitated.

+1 same here. Often the thumbnails are from media that doesn't even exist in the project anymore, but have copied over from the old template.

Is there a way to force thumbnail re-generation?

@atmosfar The project must be open. In the project manager right click on the project and "Update Thumbnails".

It would be nice to have a reliable way of updating Project Manager thumbnails that consistently represent the latest project version. After editing projects several times the PM thumbnails continue to remain the same even after those initial clips have been deleted from the project.

+1 This feature would be much appreciated.

Particularly when working from saved presets (.drb files) that contain 'often used' graphics, it's extremely unhelpful that only the first five media files are used. When working on episodic content this gets frustrating quickly.

All the project manager thumbnails therefore always show the same preset graphics and not the footage of that particular episode.

Being able to set a thumbnail (with for example a final grade) would give much quicker and efficient oversight.
