Playback Speed / Fast Forward Speed Control more granular

PostSun Nov 15, 2020 11:02 am

I recently started to dive deeper into Resolve and would am missing some features that I am used to from Premiere Pro. I understand that not all features may make sense, I also understand that I may just not have found it yet… so either way, here is one that I'd like to either know about or would like to see added to Resolve:

I truly am enjoying how fast Resolve renders color grades and is able to still playback full-resolution 4k on my 2017 MacBook Pro 15".

Talking about the Edit Page here: I am one of those people that loves to play things back in 2x and 3x speed while I am going through my video edits and it's a breeze with Resolve to do so at 2x… However…

  1. The playback speed can only be increased from 1x to 2x to 4x to 8x?! That's too much for my liking. What about those steps in between? It would be really cool if I could tell how the system how much faster it should go in smaller increments (maybe definable like with Premiere Pro)?
  2. The playback pitch makes it so that at 4x I can't understand a thing… I would even prefer if the pitch would get higher with the speeding up of things. With the current Pitch Adjustment, it get's super muddy and incomprehensible.

The goal is to be able to fast forward through the footage but still be able to understand speaking. This is tremendously helpful for at least my workflow and maybe some people agree. I'd love to hear from you.

I also would love to know if this is already possible and I just have not found the setting to have smaller speed increase increments? I have tried to search but that look came up empty.

Looking forward to engaging on this and hope to see these things implemented.

Cheers, Chris

Just wanted to mention that this would still be greatly appreciated, I have seen it mentioned in other forum posts as well and many would love this added. Please BMD.

With that I also hope that Blackmagic would start a `UserVoices` page that is not just like this forum but instead a site where users could vote on things and `BMD` can comment, give us a status update the way Adobe has been doing for a few years now.

So weirdly the Speed Editor panel allows you to do 3x, 5x, etc speed.

Unfortunately the playback quality is terrible. The audio is so choppy at 3x you can't understand a thing.

I really wanted 3x to be great and I thought it was just that I was playing a compressed format (h.264) but then I tried it with ProRes and it wasn't any better :(

+1 from me, too!

In many cases 2x for me is too slow. But at 4x words can't be understood.

3x could be the perfect middle ground. Or, maybe make audio smoother at 4x.

It's too bad there is no movement on this feature. I switched back to Premiere Pro because this is such a deal breaker for me.

Still hoping this will come at some point and improve my workflow so I can get back into DaVinci Resolve.

Any updates on this,
Tes, x4 is to fast, and x2 could be faster.
I edit 2h vidoes evry week, so x3 speed would help a lot.

Coming from Premiere Pro as well, I do not understand how this does not have more attention. What's the point of 4x if the audio gets unintelligible? Maybe it's one of those things where you don't know what you're missing if you've never tried it another way?

I set up an extension for chrome to increase/decrease by 20% speed per key press. Why? Because everyone sounds different at various speeds. Some are easier to understand at 300%, some aren't.

Given the activity on this post in 3 years, I doubt we're gonna see a change anytime soon  I, too, am considering switching back, and I really don't want to.

At that point, you're just scanning the image, not so much listening.

Jim you've responded to several of my posts with what seems to be a closed mind. I am frequently using a faster playback speed from 1.5x to 4x for the audio. When the audio is clean, yes, I can use 4x speed. So at that point, you're just scanning the image, while I'm very much doing listening. Hey- another perspective than yours, imagine that!

So, it appears Blackmagic is allowing more granular playback speed on 18.5 beta as shown on the screenshot grab from manual, but only on the advanced hardware panel with the small price point of $28k (i am sure it's worth it for those that need it). For most of us, who don't have a use for the advanced panel, please allow the same amount of granular speed control - 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, 4x.

+1 !!!

Just moved over to Resolve and surprised to see that you can't playback at 1.25 or 1.5 speed. For anyone editing longer form interviews or documentaries this is a massive timesaver. 2x is often too fast, depending on how fast people speak.

I find it quite astonishing that this feature gets zero attention from Blackmagic. There are people who are not going to use Resolve simply because of this (and I know a few of those; including myself).

The request has been open for 3 years at this point.

This feature. Please this feature. Editing a podcast at 2x is just often too fast and I miss things. 1.5x is the sweet spot. I really, really don't want to use Premiere just for this.

I have to admit, 1.5X would be handy to have in some situations, when checking the final right before a render.

I can report that the 4x time speed under windows is useable. But on Mac it is not.
