Edit page curves/keyframe editor is horrendous

PostMon Nov 23, 2020 5:24 pm

I have almost ditched DaVinci multiple times for premiere pro, simply because the absolute atrocity that is the curves/keyframe editor in the edit page. It never ever works the way I need it to. Usually I can't even see the thing because it opens on the timeline. The spline graph makes no sense, it is incredibly limiting, it does not seem to allow for any kind of precise adjustments. When I'm retiming something in reverse, I can't even use the curves, because they simply disappear below the line, and I have no way of adjusting them. Blackmagic please steal premiere pro's keyframe editor. I do believe this one thing holds many videographers like me back from switching from premiere.

I'm in violent agreement with the need to BM to address the many shortcoming in the edit page keyframing, but on the curves disappearing below the line, in the same way as you can change the scale positively via the number in the top right corner of the curve, you can do the same by dragging the respective number to the lower right of the curve up/down - pulling it down and making the (-ve) number larger will raise the line, thus allowing you to see your adjustments. I got me too initially.

Hope that helps a little bit.

Agreed, keyframe editor can be far improved, even better than premiere. I'm not even a huge fan of premiere keyframing compared to after effects or 3d software, but it's definitely better than resolve.

+1; as well as Premiere, Avid has a good keyframe editor/graph, or just bring them from Fusion (but not with the keyframe editor set to point as that is just bad to work with).

The current system has run its course and is simply not up to the demands of a professional NLE.

They sell it as a "feature" (having it on the timeline, just right on the clip) but the implementation is awful in its current state, and almost impossible to use.

Resolve is stellar for color correction and it’s trying to fill the gap with Premiere Pro on the editing side.
I love Resolve and I’m continuing to learn it, I have the Studio version, but unfortunately i have to continue to use Premiere Pro because the lacks of a decent curves+keyframe editing of all standard and ofx effects.
With Premiere Pro I do some basic motion graphics with precise curve interpolations.
Blackmagic developers are interested to cut and color page only.

Yes!

Also, when editing curves in the timeline, why not auto-enlarge/zoom the curves window?

+1 edit page keyframes are bad. Fusion’s splines are pretty decent, I’d be ok with a mini version of that. Fusion keyframes are too small though.

It’s worth noting that even Premiere’s re-timing UI is different from the rest of its keyframing interface.

I often wish I could “pin” certain points in time, sometimes including the beginning and/or end of a clip, and rate stretch moments in the middle, similar to fair light flex time. Currently, it’s a multi-step operation, where I have to re-position the end of a clip back to wherever it’s out point was, any time I change something earlier.

*edit*

At least the keyframes on the Edit page aren't as bad as the ones on the Color page, now THOSE are AWFUL! I wonder if they'd catch too much flack from established colorists if they tried to improve it? Or, does the color page keyframing system only shine when you've got a $30K panel to operate it?

Hard to believe that this still has not been improved. We are at version 18.6!

I would love to see the ability to expand the keyframe graph into something larger where I can actually fine tune the bezier curves. Why is the window limited to just that tiny area. It doesn't even expand when you increase the height of the video tracks.

Blackmagic needs to understand that we don't want to have to use fusion for every effect in the timeline (not that the keyframer in fusion is any better!). Sometimes we just want to scale an image up and get some nice movement on it.

I would love to see something like After Effects keyframe graph. Anyone out there listening?

I hard to believe that people think that premiere and after effects have good key frame interface.
An interface where to have loop animation in 2023 should I need to write an expression and I not have all option that you had like drop down menu in a 3d software of 1987 (Amiga Sculpt 4d, lightwave3d, cinema 4d).
Have a better interface yes, think that adobe do a good work on interface? Noooo.
People, most of ui designer stay to 90’ and I talk this not be cause I’m young that want to have all on touch, I told this be cause I animate digitally from end of 80, I’ m tired to see the same worst interface on all key frame windows on almost all 2d software.

+1 a thousand times on this!!

Why has this not been fixed? Blackmagic, are you listening?

It's infuriating that the keyframe window can't be expanded vertically and that the position of the curves within the window can't be changed. Most of the time the curve I'm trying to edit is crammed down at the bottom of the window and I can't see what I'm working with. To be useful the curve window should be able to be expanded FULL SCREEN! And I should be able to adjust the scale of the window so that I can move the keyframes in smaller increments.

This is the most lame implementation of keyframing that I have ever seen in any software.

Please fix this!

I never liked Premiere's keyframe interface until I moved to Resolve. It isn't perfect, by any means, but not being constrained to the timeline is a major advantage in and of itself.

Say what you will about AE's substandard expressions interface, it is a headache, but expressions are powerful and using pure code makes them incredibly flexible.

I'm of the opinion that the graph editor in Fusion is among the best I've ever used - contending with Blender. The Resolve interface, however, is borderline unusable. If I ever want to do more than a basic linear keyframe, I always create a Fusion clip. This is inconvenient and is a big point of frustration.

Resolve's timeline is already too large for my liking, requiring audio tracks to be too tall before waveforms appear, and this makes it cumbersome to use. Throwing a graph editor into the mix only exacerbates this. Let alone the odd, hard to comprehend behaviour between different types of properties.

Everytime a major version update comes out the first thing I check is keyframing on the edit page.

The frustrations I have taken out on my peripherals because of that tiny window....arghhh..

One little pixel mis-click on a spline-handle and it swaps to another keyed attribute. You can't pull handles out of bounds of the window. On a 4k display those little dots are way too small to make accurate adjustments.

I swear we will get to the point where AI will rotoscope every actor in and entire feature film in 3minutes....but to keyframe what we want done with that mask...good luck on your little tiny spline window.

I reckon just having us stretch the spline editor vertically to make it BIG would already be an improvement.
