Grids and guides in the viewer

Having a toggle switch that allows us tor activate/deactivate a grid (with an editable size) in the viewer would be great.

This grid should have snapping properties (same thing as in Photoshop), to help us place and align
any elements that can be moved with the move tool.

There is an effect you can add directly to clips or to an Adjustment Clip. You can even customize it quite extensively.

And you can drag the Adjustment Clip with the effect to a bin for reuse.

Yeah the Grid generator. I used it... twice for exactly that, but it's not very "elegant" imo.
The second time I used it made me write this feature request :D

Nice. this is a "workaround" to the feature request.
Feature requests are meant to improve functionality and I think this is a good candidate.
Flame has this. Would be nice if Resolve added it.

@Jim - I didn't think to use an adjustment clip for it. I may adopt this. Normally, I would create a "solid" and then make it a compound clip and then add grid. Then use it over and over as a source/compound clip.

Actually, I think this was BMD's answer to the Feature Request, which came long before this thread.

Personally, I think what we currently have offers a lot more flexibility that what's being asked for here.

The big difference is that as an Overlay in the viewer, there is NO CHANCE that it would be baked in on a render.

I gotta admit, I have rendered out and had the grid clip still active on the output. It happens...

What we are talking about is still a workaround. Its a plug-in intended for design. It also is not as easy to create guides. It helps, but its not good enough If Resolve wants to be a finishing product. An overlay feature is a must.

+1 for manually adjusted guidelines. Something like in After effects or Photoshop

+1, the grid workaround is not ideal at all.

“We don’t need more workarounds: we have already plenty of those and we call them solutions”.....

I'd like to see grids in the viewer as well, maybe even a choice for showing them on the main color monitor. But not rendering the show out with the grid. (And stuff like this did happen in the old daVinci 2K days.)

Create a track just for Grid effects and disable it before Delivery.

I'm still thinking what we have is sufficient.

No it is not. It will break caches up to the wazoo. It’s a terrible workaround.

Proper customizable guidelines as overlay is what we need. if you like this workaround, good for you, but for everyone else, this is a legitimate feature request.

No it's not... far from it.

Imagine saying that to any Photoshop users : Meh, just create a grid manually, and import it as a layer every time you need to align something properly - It wouldn't make any sense. Or havîng a "plugin". It's the same here...

I mean, why are you against the possibility to have adjustable guides with snapping properties, or a customizable grid (or both, like in Photoshop and many other applications) to align things very quickly?

It's common sense, the less time we spend on finding ways to do basic actions, the more time we have for expressing our creativity and focus on the important things.

We're editing "images" with Davinci Resolve, and these basic "helpers" should be implemented imo. And the snapping thing should be available for border of the frame too (with always the possibility to activate them or not)

Edit:
Oh, and I forgot...the "workaround" adds complexity and more things for the computer to process. It's a waste of time and resource. Everything adds up.

OK, i have a “somewhat” slightly more elegant workaround.

In my case I have a 3840x2160 image/screen

i did a black file and create the grid i want/need (in my case is a 3x3 grid, one pixel wide), you can create that in resolve/photoshop/fusion/nuke, whatever

I did export a png 8 bit PLUS ALPHA.

Now, in resolve i load that in the DATA BURN IN / LOGO section and adjusted to be centered.

It plays in realtime in my box and you can have up to three of the per burnin setup and you can turn them on with a tick...

Not ideal but better....

I am a new user just started with DR 17.2.2 & was surprised that such an advance video /color editor has a very basic functionality of snapping to grid missing in the viewer.

Seems like video editors don't ever align things to perfection. Me coming from Graphic design & photography background the very first title names I created while learning how to do it I wanted to align exactly at the same point on screen for entire length & found myself searching all Davinci tutorials but could not find a way to have grid on the viewer.

As of now I am having adjustment layer grid but its a unnecessary detour to create those when a simple method exist since last 30 years in several software (Snap to grid)

+100 to this feature request, those who love to take detour are most welcome to do so but let there be this basic functionality in next version v18.

I'm in the same boat, every single application I've used where we can put "floating" images or whatever has a snapping to grid feature. I mean, even Word 2010 lol.

This features need to be implemented asap imo. Edit page and Fusion

I also like the rules in photoshop where you choose lines and those become the reference grid….

Yes, a grid.
Just a button to activate ON and OFF.
I'm all for that. How many times do we need to align text or other things?
Just put a viewer grid without the need to add an effect, THANKS BlackMagic!

It's such an obvious addition. Make sure there's an option to set the guide position numerically too, plus the ability to save custom guides.

this is another way I workaround this (recently, i learned from another user, so forgive me if i don't credit the actual user because I forgot the name..), it might have been suggested before, but still.

have a adjustment layer in a track and in that adjustment layer, you put a OFX grid in the edit page with the settings you need.
put that adjustment layers in a [power bin] (so it is visible in all the projects of that database).

if you need a quick grid, drop the layer on top of what you need to adjust and after you're done, remove the layer.

GREAT TRICK MAN.
I did some thing like that with adjustemnt clips who can have many things modified applied to the clips under. Veeery useful.

With a small library of commonly used grids this is probably the best workaround so far. not elegant, yes. But way better for render cache.

Also easy to switch off for render by forcing Burn-In OFF!

+1 on proper implementation!!!

+1.

I use text and graphics a lot in my videos.
What I would like is a grid functionality that lets you choose the normal ones, like golden ratio, fibinacci spiral, rule of thirds, center.

Snapping is a must and I really like what Figma and Canva has done here. You can of course snap to the grid lines, you can snap to center and you can snap to other objects. When you move an object next to another and then you move the third one it will also align with the same value the distance is between the first two. So if you have 40 px between item A and B, you will get the same between B and C. It usually pops up with the pixel number when you are close and it snaps.

Aligning objects as well horizontally, vertically and being able to anchor them at the top, middle, bottom, left, center, right would also be great :D

+1 from me as well - this was actually a request, I'm glad you saved me time, and wrote up for me!

I often use grids as a reference when manually removing shake, and aligning things in the footage.

Please consider - Davinci already has great view window tools like the transform and crop etc., grids would make a perfect addition.

Being able to specify the number of rows / columns would be nice as well.
