Proxy Media indicator in thumbnail

PostThu Jan 21, 2021 9:36 am

Hi,

By now, the only way I have found to know if a proxy file is available and generated is in Media page with Media Pool displayd in list view.

It would be nice to display a visual indicator in thumbnails (Cut and edit page) when proxy files are generated and used. Someting like a green dot, a triangle in corner, a colored line (left ot right side or at top) or any other sign like this.
Displaying this for clips in timeline would be also helpful.

This colored indicator could be shared and be the same for optimized media.
Let's say green for Proxy and orange for Optimized media.

With such visual informations, you know which clips to generate (Optimized Media or Proxy) for small hardware configuration and prevent GPU memory full warning or any lagging or such/similar things.

One can create Flags for clips that have Proxy media.

I'm not convinced this really needs solving by other methods.

Anything to save another necessary step for speed is worth it though? The same way that the colour page has marks on the clips or on nodes to show that a certain process has taken place. It’s a quick and easy thing to code. You don’t want to have to click on each clip and then look at each scope / wheel to see if a certain change has been made. I think it would save time in most cases to have a bit of code that simply shows a P for instance in the corner of the media/event or a different shaded edge on clips that have proxies. This could even only show when playback using proxies is on for those who don’t use the workflow and want to stick to OM/original footage on the timeline.

I think, moving forwards and as proxies are now a part of DR 17, and it is more than capable of taking on “the big boys” , the future of the software is allowing all sorts of different workflows especially for users that are more familiar with other NLE’s. I don’t think applying less-than-obvious workarounds is that helpful to new users.

I don't know. Adding things we can't yet do has some appeal over adding new ways to do things we can already do.

For example, one idea that I would rather have prioritized is a sort of Storyboard view for bins, where we can manually arrange clips by hand and which would not be affected by any kind of Sorting in other bin views.

A simple corner icon for clips in both the media pool and timeline would do.

Perhaps even be greyed out to show that a proxy is available but is not in use, switching to green when you have proxy media enabled.

-1.

I prefer not to have extra icons/colors, etc on clips as it makes scanning clips more difficult. I already have a use for green flags. :)

If it were a non-default option that would be OK.

You can burn-in the word "Proxy" when creating them, but obviously you would only see this in the viewers not the thumbnails.

If we can add a "bug," text or something before generating proxy media would be nice, as they have in PPro. Someone above says we can add the word "proxy" to it but I couldn't find a way to do that.
BMD please implement this!
