UT Video decode support request for OBS output

PostWed Jan 27, 2021 12:15 pm

When selecting "Lossless Quality, Tremendously Large File Size" Under Settings > Output > Recording > Recording Quality in OBS Studio, the video stream is compressed using the utvideo codec. ffprobe gives the following details:

ffprobe version 2021-01-20-git-2021dbe1d6-full_build ........ Copyright (c) 2007-2021 the FFmpeg developers

Input #0, avi, from ........:
Metadata:
software : Lavf58.29.100
Duration: 00:00:44.87, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 65331 kb/s
Stream #0:0: Video: utvideo (ULH0 / 0x30484C55), yuv420p(bt709/unknown/unknown), 800x600, 63825 kb/s, 30 fps, 30 tbr, 30 tbn, 30 tbc
Stream #0:1: Audio: pcm_s16le ([1][0][0][0] / 0x0001), 48000 Hz, 2 channels, s16, 1536 kb/s

The above file is 349 MB (366,398,658 bytes)

This codec is super fast even for seeking (enc/dec too) and so works great as a recording and intermediate codec when your source is simple. If your original video is in 4:2:0 format, transcoding to something like YUV 4:2:2 Cineform Film Scan 2 only saves about 10% over this codec in my testing, though Film Scan 1 does bring it down about 30%.

It would be great if Davinci Resolve could ingest the utvideo codec directly so we don't have to transcode. The github for the codec is: umezawatakeshi utvideo (I'm not allowed to post URLs)

I know there have been similar requests in the past, but this is the only one I have a compelling argument for since it has the potential of improving the workflow for the many youtubers using OBS studio, especially those not wanting to faff with ffmpeg.

I'm a long time fan of UT. Great lossless codec. (Didn't know it was an option in OBS.)

I would love for Resolve to support the codec, but I'm thinking more broadly.

VfW support in Resolve, so that any codec on my system is automatically supported.
