3D Luts - chroma and gamma separation

PostThu Mar 25, 2021 12:28 am

It would be great to have more granular control over 3d lut application:
specifically I'd like to be able to separately apply the chroma transformation without applying the gamma curve.
Right now I need to go to a separate program (I use GrossGrade, but 3D lut creator also has this option, I think) to modify an existing lut, remove the 1D curve from it, export the lut, import into DVR and only then apply.

Not sure what GrossGrade actually does but sounds a bit strange. One thing you could try in Resolve is to apply the LUT, convert to luma-chroma representation, copy in original luma from before LUT and convert back to rgb. This is the only reasonable logic I see behind separating chroma change from gamma curve.

or you could just use a layer mixer set to luminance or colour

Well I'll be damned :)
Thanks, didn't think of that.

UPDATE: upon further testing, the result is not identical. It's close but, the difference is apparent. The modified lut still looks more precise and yields a better result.
