Centering cropped images/videos

PostMon May 03, 2021 8:12 pm

As far as I know, there is no way to center an image/video that has been cropped without just doing it all manually (which is difficult when I can't find the size of the new cropped image/video). This should be a very simple addition, as all you would need to do is take the size of the image/video you're trying to center (hopefully with the option to do the new cropped size), subtract the dimension/s that you want to be centered from the respective dimension of the total size of the video, divide that number by 2 and then adjust the position to that value. This would be possible to do manually (as in, figuring out the calculations yourself) if it were possible to know the dimensions of the image you are trying to center (there may be a way to know this, but I don't).

If there is another way to do this, I would appreciate a reply.

A way to easy the pain is to have two layers: the one one the top is a mask that does the framing you intended (centered) and the one under is your image that you can freely move around.

I know is a workaround, but it can be very effective.

Aren't the dimensions of the new cropped video just your original dimensions minus you Crop Left+Crop Right for the horizontal, and minus Crop Top+Crop Bottom for the vertical? If your original image is 1920x1080 and you Crop Left 100 and Crop Right 100, then your new horizontal dimension is 1920-100-100=1720. The new vertical if you crop top 100 and bottom 100 is 1080-100-100=880. If you crop an uneven amount and want to center the new image, then take the difference of your two crop values and divide by 2 as I did in my example below. At least that is how I would do it.

I have always done this by eye using a grid overlay on an adjustment clip or safe area display.
