Render In Place UI improvements

PostTue Aug 31, 2021 5:35 pm

The new Render In Place feature is really great. I've been using it a lot recently, and could wish for a few simple UI improvements to improve the workflow.

The following requests all relate to the Render In Place UI dialogue:
  1. Add a "Location" field with Browse button to choose the destination. Defaults to the last destination used for this project (or at least this session).
  2. Add a "Filename" field where the filename can be specified. Defaults to the clip name, as now. Disabled when more than one clip is selected.
  3. Add a "File suffix" field, where a suffix can be chosen for multi-clip Render In Place operations. Defaults to "Render", matching the current behaviour. Resolve would then add the render number to the end in situations where duplicate filenames were generated.
  4. Ideally, nice-to-have, support variables in the Filename and File Suffix fields, like in Deliver - such as %Resolution, %Frame Rate, etc.
Also: add Render In Place to the main menu, and allow adding a keyboard shortcut for it via Keyboard Customization.

Here's a mockup of what the UI could look like:
Image

Reasoning:
  1. Currently we have to choose the destination every time Render In Place is used, via the OS file browser. This is a bit tedious when using it many times in quick succession. It'd be much quicker and easier if this could be set in the dialogue, so that that when the same destination is desired (as is often the case), no interaction is needed.
  2. I often find myself wanting to rename the result of a Render In Place after running it. Being able to pick in the dialogue the filename (for single render operations) and/or the suffix would again save time, saving me from having to go into the Media Pool to rename (which still leaves the on-disk files at their original names).
  3. Having a separate Suffix field allows control over filename when multiple clips are selected, and allows for identifying groups of renders. For example, I might enter a suffix of "Scene 4 Daily 310821". Then I can select all the clips in a timeline and Render In Place, and all the clips created will have this suffix which clearly identifies to me why I created them.
  4. Nice to have as mentioned, but I could see a benefit to being able to use the powerful variable system to further customise the output names. This could make Render In Place a complete replacement for Deliver -> Individual Clips in many circumstances.

++1 great ideas.

Can I add to this here?

1: Add the ability to specify a keyboard shortcut for render in place. I cannot do so on my system.

2: As it works now, when selecting multiple clips, each is rendered separately as a batch operation.

This goes for clips stacked on top of each other on a timeline.

An option to render stacked clips as one--as if they were a compound clip--would be great.

I realize I can create a compound clip and render it in place, but it's an extra step that is a waste of time and creates more stuff in my bins.

Example: Two clips stacked in V2 and V1, each set to 50 percent zoom and arranged so V2 is in left half of screen and V1 is in right half (i.e. I have a split screen). With render in place I get two clips, and the V2 clip obscures the V1 clip and has to be cropped to show the V2 clip. Sorry, can't insert image.)

Well if we would get so many options, we should get an ability to make a preset too ?
3 dots on the upper right, click there for a drop down menu for presets.

Yes very good point. I hadn't realised it wasn't possible to add a shortcut for this. I'll add that to my OP.

That would certainly be useful. I didn't want to add too much to my original request and make it seem like a huge job to implement it all such that it doesn't get considered.

But yeah, presets would be nice to have on top, if/when the other features are provided.

I just looked at the Fairlight page's Export Audio UI for the first time. This is exactly the sort of UI needed for Render In Place. It includes destination folder, file naming options including tags, duplicate name options, and via the three-dot menu it has the ability to save and recall presets:

Bumping this for the next version.

The improvements in 17.4 are welcome - it's nice that I can untick "Fusion Composition", meaning that the underlying media is rendered without the comp, and after Render In Place I still have the Fusion comp on top of the newly rendered media.

But it's still slow and tedious using Render In Place regularly in a project, having to constantly choose the destination folder over and over and over.

So +1 again from me for a full UI for Render In Place, mirroring the features of Fairlight's Export Audio.

Thanks.

I've been using Render in Place extensively and wanted to add my +1 to the above.

A major improvement for me ould be to have renders take the clip name, rather than the file name (at least in Resolve if not on the hard drive): my timeline is full of clips called A047_11171136_C044 Render 1.mov where the clip was named as 'Landscape wide' or the like. In an offline edit this is not useful.

My ideal would be to set settings once and have the UI default to those until changed - naming system, codec, destinations (bin and hard drive). For anyone like me rendering the same codec to the same directory every time, a keyboard shortcut followed by enter would then get the task done in a few swift strokes.

An issue not mentioned is the buildup of obsolete render files on my hard drive and in the media pool. When I 'decompose to original' I'd love the option to remove the obsolete file and clip. Alternatively a tool for cleaning up old render files would be great.

Lastly I would appreciate if the timecode of the rendered files could match that of the source clip, allowing (re)syncing of any audio and other tasks: the power of Render in Place is such that it can be used by offline editors instead of Optimised Media and Proxies with a few small changes.

+10 !

With the addition to have the option to pick the resolution!!

Let's say I have a Fusion-heavy 4k Comp in an HD timeline and want to reframe it after the render in place.
That would be godsend ...
