Further optimize BRAW GPU Decoding for M1 Chips

PostThu Feb 10, 2022 7:33 pm

I'm so far loving the M1 Max, and Blackmagic has done an amazing job optimizing Resolve for GPU decoding of H264 / H265. BRAW does pretty well, but it's pretty mind boggling to see that most tasks actually do better with compressed H265, than with BRAW. For example, encoding and OFX fps playback is better with H265 vs BRAW. The Blackmagic RAW Speed Test shows this machine getting 184fps when using Metal decoding, however I don't see that in real-world use. This leads me to believe there is further optimization to be done for GPU decoding on the M1 chips. I could be totally wrong, but just wanted to throw that out there!

Thanks,
Dan

Hopefully it can be improved, but keep in mind that H.264/H.265 has dedicated hardware made specifically for that single purpose, making the comparison a bit skewed.

Yea, very true! It’s not like it’s bad with braw…like at all, but it would be cool if it could be pushed a little further.
