Change project and timeline FPS

PostTue May 17, 2022 11:33 am

Request: the ability of change the FPS of a project or a timeline once it has been started to be edited.

It would be great that DVR does the math so we can freely change the FPS value after a project has been edited.

We are aware that this setting can not be currently changed on DVR17, as edit points/keyframes are based on the project / timeline FPS setting. With a bit of math, perhaps DVR will offer ut the freedom to change global or timelime FPS, which will help a lot on situations were our initial FPS doesn't match with our reality, sometimes by mistake, other times because customer needs, or because the direction of the initial project has changed.

I think the problem is that there is some media that is interpreted based on the project setting (the biggest one that comes to mind is audio) so changing the project timeline would effectively change the TC of those clips. This would be problematic. An option might be to have the program ask for frame rate any time you imported a clip without a set FPS.

Overall I find the fact that you can set other FPS on timelines within a project more than flexible enough.

Several other NLEs don’t let you change the frame rate when there’s media in the timeline.
But they DO let you change it if the timeline is empty - even if it previously had media in it.

In these NLEs I’ve done a select all, cut, change timeline frame rate, paste when I’ve wanted to change the timeline’s frame rate.

I tried this in resolve but it doesn’t work. I have to actually create a new timeline, set other attributes like the name and dimensions, and then copy the media over.

So as an intermediate enhancement this would be nice - and probably easy - if the more general solution is too hard.

Curious why this is a problem. Seems like it would make sense to keep the old timeline as a backup and then paste into a new correct timeline. Seems a lot less risky then copying a whole sequence to the clipboard.

It’s just another little annoyance that slows me down in Resolve. The aggregate of them all is quite substantial.

My request is that DVR does the math to solve this limit. It's all about internal maths to make FPS box editable.
