Enhance Scroll so it's usable for end titles

PostWed Jul 27, 2022 11:29 pm

I think with two very minor tweaks the Scroll would be usable.

1. Recognize * as separating columns in a traditional center-gutter scroll layout. Add a parameter to let the user adjust the width of the central gutter.

2. Let them choose between scrolling based on the length of the clip or a scroll rate that would result in no jitter. The selection would be in pixels per frame. That could be explained in the manual but it would amount to picking a number and seeing how fast the scroll felt. Much easier than doing the math. Most people don't care exactly how long the scroll lasts - rather they care that it's about the right time and feels smooth.

1. How does one then use * in the text?

This didn't make it into 18 so here's a bump and hope that BMD decides to do it... :)

Yeah, but what if you actually wanted to show the asterisk, rather than use it as a Tab?

That's super simple and is done all the time in other situations where one needs to escape a special character. The standard answer is to use \. So \* would print the * rather than using it as a column indicator.

Regardless though, it would be pretty sad if, for concerns about people putting a * in credits, the whole easy-to-use scheme were abandoned.

But then what if one wants to use the \ and the * characters?

I'm not thinking part 1 is a good idea. Some other way to denote columns, like Tab maybe?

You can escape any character, including "\"

Great idea, would simplify things a lot.

Thanks Dragos.

Jim - the \ method has been standard across computers since the 70's. Not everyone knows about it but, since it's the standard solution, it's usually better to use it and leverage what's come before. Not always! But usually. :)

for lining up, Quantel had a better building scroll structure (20 years ago) that could also be nicely fit in a excel file. (but never implemented the pixel per frame... shame...)

let's say you have 5 distinct columns, profession/name (left justified and right justified) and three columns that are center justified where the music inevitably will end.

on the top tab, outside of the actual frame, in the GUI, you put arrows where the columns will be.

the direction of the arrow will dictate justification (you could rotate them) left, down right for left justified, center justified, right justified.

in an excel file you make the text file filling exactly 5 columns the first will be (in our case) music right, then profession, then music center, then names, then music right column.

select the whole stack, copy, move to Quantel, paste and you're done.

then you can proceed to arrange the column font spacing and so forth... that was an earlier software that my memory does not remember anymore....

tab will decide in which column the text will be.

It would be nice to have an easy way in the edit page to do scrolls but in the end I took the time and created multicolumn scrolls in the fusion page and saved as titles using this method to get smooth scrolls. I just need to select one of the scroll titles in my saved folder, open in fusion page and copy over the new text document prepared with tabs.

Terrific tutorial!
Now it'd be nice if BMD made a mice simple control as described above that encapsulated all that work so people wouldn't have to go through all this to make a smooth credit roll. :)
