Bug/Feature request (?) 3DLut for clean video feed

PostSun Sep 18, 2022 8:29 pm

Hi there, i am not sure whether this is a feature or bug request. When loading a 3DLut into the video monitor LUT, it doesn’t have any effect on the clean video feed on the color page, but it does have an effect on the clean video feed when you are in the edit page. I think it would be very helpful if the lut would be shown on the color page as well. Or even better, if there was a LUT folder just for the clean video feed. I am
On 18.0.3 Studio macOS Big Sur.

We need to add a possibility to load 3D LUT to CleanFeed window.

I really don't understand why there is no way to calibrate Clean Feed using LUT!

It is impossible to use ACES and Color Managed projects with a non Rec709 timeline gamut and with calibrated output.

It is impossible to use Scopes and also have calibrated output.
It is impossible to use Clean Feed and UI viewers calibrated both.

All time we need to disable calibration lut node when render.
Because the only solution to get calibrated Clean Feed output is to add LUT to a Timeline node.
But this is fix to the absent feature that must be available in Resolve since Clean Feed was published.

Clean Feed is meant for content monitoring, not Quality Control.

QC needs a dedicated I/O device.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Jim Simon above has the answer. Read page 2756 of the Resolve 18.1 manual, "Limitations When Grading With the Viewer on a Computer Display." This explains why it's unwise to try to use a computer display for final color correction. The same problem also exists with the "Clean Feed" output, since it's not color managed.

I've been using Resolve since 2010 (and daVinci 2K for 10 years before that), color management and calibration has always been necessary. We've never monitored from the operating system, because there's too many ways it can go horribly wrong. With an UltraStudio or a Decklink, it's relatively easy to hook up an external display and feel confident that what you're seeing is accurate and can be relied on day to day.

I go a step further and use another computer for Omniscope (or Scopebox or your choice of external scopes), but it's basically on the same loop as the monitor. That way, whatever I see on the display is also on the scopes. It's a more tweakable way of monitoring than using the internal scopes within Resolve... but we do check it every so often with Bars to make sure that the external scopes and internal scopes precisely match.

I have no problems to calibrate Clean Feed and use it together with ICM on Windows.

Color Management on a computer monitor is reality, if you understand what to do. I understand it on low level, because I am a developer. There is no any important issues and limitations - the only 8-bit RGB output. That is fine for 90% users who use Resolve.

For users who have own calibration device LUT-calibration is simple.

Some years ago I was one of those who asked BMD to add secondary monitor output support. This request was made very quickly. But we asked it to monitor video, not to show video with wrong colors.

If you bypass the color management in OS and use a (calibrated) decent monitor, it works without a lut.

This is the most wanted feature I ask here from the beginning of the Resolve Clean Feed history.

Unfortunately They don't want to create a such elemental feature for most users.

I ask this feature again here.

I use Clean Feed on my 10-bit calibrated monitor and it is working correctly.
But because I cannot use LUT in setting I place it to the Timeline node tree.

It is very bad, because I cannot use RCM, ACES, correct scopes view.... but I must use Clean Feed.
I just cannot buy and use special output devices because motherboard slot limitations.

The most wanted feature for many years to me.

I use Video Clean Feed on a hardware calibrated monitor and have no need to use a LUT.

What if you get a monitor that accepts a LUT and can store it in the monitor itself?

I still say trying to bypass the effect of the OS in a computer feed is risky and dangerous. If you use a color-managed output from a Blackmagic device, it'll actually be right, since it separates it from any adverse effect of the OS. This is the same advice I gave ten years ago: it hasn't changed.

What if we get LUT setting on Resolve as a similar setting for main GUI monitor? If you think that some feature is dangerous, it does not mean that it is dangerous.

I have a calibrator device and I think this is NOT dangerous. There are many strange youtubers who promoted the idea that Clean Feed is a key of all possible problems in Resolve because OS.
