Customizable Default Clip Colors

It would be nice to have user-customizable default clip colors for things like Adjustment Clips, Fusion Clips, Compound Clips, Generators, and Titles.

I normally keep Compound and Fusion clips a custom color so they stand out from the original media in the timeline, just for tracking, and it'd be a nice quality-of-life feature.

This has been asked for years, but I cannot understand why it hasn't been implemented. I like all the AI integrations that have come out in the past upgrades, but some of those are more suited to advanced editors and I don't think are used as much as something like this would be used.

I give them credit that they give more than just 4 or 5 colors but a few of the colors are easily mistaken for another color.

Please, Blackmagic Design. Add a color picker for clips, markers, and flags.

Customizing the name would also be helpful. I could customize the name to be what is for rather than just the name of the color. I think that would make it easier to communicate with whoever you are collaborating with as well.

I think there's another feature request for this elsewhere on the forums. This request was intended to be assigning different default colors to colored elements - like a custom default color for generators would be, say, yellow (customized default color) instead of purple (current default color).

I could not agree more. I am stunned this doesn't already exist. This is not exactly a highly advanced feature and should take a programmer two days to implement and another week of interface testing. PLease get this implemented.

What is really strange is that it seems to be hard-coded into the code, as there isn't even a parameter file, .ini-file or even some values in the RegDB (not that parameters should ever be put there, but God have I seen many stupid and wrong uses for RegDB). The first thing I looked for was the option to go to a .ini file to see if I could find a list of RGB or HEX color codes to adjust, but no such luck. (I may have looked the wrong places, but that would really have been such a nice feature).

BUT... IF you choose to implement this feature, at least ALSO make it possible to implement MORE than the limited number of colors that are available now. (I often like to vary the colors within a group of tracks, like making the main track one color and then the other tracks within the group slightly faded, but the same color to make it possible to see what color it is).

One last thing. If the background color of the track can be set limitlessly it might be a good idea to either automatically make the audio representation (in audio tracks) in a contrast color so it isn't always white, or you could make it a dual function option where you can adjust both background color and curve color adjustable. That way you also give people with many tracks and groups a lot of variation, so the same color could be used on several tracks but with a different color for the audio representation.

This is really something I need a lot.

Nearing 2025 and they still haven't implemented this in version 19.
It's definitely not high on their priority list as they have provided the predefined colors for us to use but yes it would be great to add or change specific colors to what we desire, especially since you can do so in Premiere Pro and After Effects.

I do have one theory though and I could be completely off the mark but I was thinking because resolve is primarily known for color grading, I wonder if those particular pre-defined colours were chosen so it doesn't affect or muddle a colorist's vision when they are grading (or reduces it at the very least). Especially for pro-level colorists working in a dark room, those pre-defined colors are not super bright or vibrant, which would probably help with reducing eye strain. That's my thinking anyways, but that kinda makes sense to me.

I'd go further and have the mixer channels coloured the same as the clips. It makes it easier to see dialogue, music, and FX , etc. This is something I use in Pro Tools always using the same colours for each type of track content.
