Alt up/down should not overwrite until Alt is let go

Timeline: The ALT+UP/DOWN arrow key combination should not overwrite anything until the ALT key is depressed, just as ALT or ALT+SHIFT dragging don't overwrite until let go.

I favor a different idea than this one, to have the Auto Track Selector respected for this operation.
So that any tracks with ATS off will be skipped.

Either proposed solution would definitely be preferable to how it currently works.
as it is it just wrecking balls through any other track above or below.

I prefer the current behaviour to be honest, very quick and intuitive way of overwriting stacks of clips. Yes I know about flatten timeline but that's the entire timeline and only works for video. This should be a user preference at best.

Disagree. To get the current behavior with the suggested change one must only release and re-press the alt key. That feels like a small price to pay for the added and more common functionality.

So I’d have to release and repress several times in quick succession to move clips between tracks while deleting others? That would be silly.

That could be. I was thinking of only one up and then down.
You may be right in that this feature might kill your way of deleting clips. That said I still think it’d help many more people than it would hurt.
There are many other ways of deleting clips. Why is this one crucial for you?

This is all redundant anyway, move clips up/down is only alt-arrow because that's how it's set in keyboard shortcuts i.e. you can change it to a single keystroke if you like and then you'd be stuck. So it would be better to ask for a User Preference for whether the command overwrites clips (while also effectively deleting them) or not.
In Premiere it does but in Avid it does not, you can move clips on top of others and then reveal the underlying clip just by moving the overlying clip again, and it will only commit to the overwrite if you play that part of the timeline (though if you have Segment Mode set to Insert it will instead move clips out of the way entirely). So it's another case where different behaviours will suit different types of editor.

The combination of convenience, speed and precision when dealing with specific parts of the timeline. If it's the whole timeline and just video, I've set Flatten Unused Clips to a single keystroke.

Good point about the command being bindable to other keystrokes.
Seems then like a preference would be better.

My proposal has been to add a Layered Video Editing mode that will prevent clips from being deleted when other clips are placed on top. Resolve already has Layered Audio Editing, which essentially does this but it's not perfect as I've found a couple problems where clips can still get overwritten (using Alt+Arrow keys is one of the instances that still overwrites clips, so this needs to be fixed too).
I have a detailed feature request for it here, if you like the idea give it a bump.
Layered Video Editing:viewtopic.php?f=33&t=176919Resolve automatically deleting clips and transitions while editing is my #1 complaint about Resolve so I'd like options to turn this behavior off. I do not want Resolve deleting anything without my explicit say so.
