Color density

PostMon Jun 12, 2023 6:43 am

Time to improve the HUE curves. Color density option is missing. Maybe a sync option for saturation to luminance would be enough.
People are making their own DCTLs that have improved saturation, hue and density options.
Color selection doesn't overlap as much with the others. Except DCTLs are awkward to use and implementing something similar to Resolve would be great.
Thank you so much for your amazing work.

A node set to HSV color space and with H and V channel disabled would let you play with the color density.
Play with a curve or gamma and gain settings for a start.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Thank you very much. I wanted something a little different, but this might help.

I do this but until now only used the gain wheel to adjust saturation. Can there be done more?

I also use this method, but it would be nice if it was separate for red, yellow, green, cyan, blue and magenta. Like the fancy DCTLs that kind of put the tools in Resolve to shame.

Yes I agree. The HSV method yields visually much nicer results than simple (de-) saturation but targeting colors would be a great improvement.

Use the color warper, pick the outer ring points and lower the luminance.

Is that what you're looking for?

Thanks a lot. I tried it, somehow it works, I've played with warper before and it's definitely a good, neglected tool. I was thinking more like the one in this video:

There's so much more that works better than traditional HUE curves. Saturation and hue work better there too, without overly affecting the surrounding colors.

pretty much any of the tools in that DCTL can be replicate with the warper, although not that easy.

it's simplicity of using the tools you already have vs a dedicate made tool.

Try both HSL & HSV

A subtractive saturation control, that controls a color density should be
added to the Wheel section in additional to Color Boost and Sat.

It is the most useful feature I want to see in the color grading page. Because we always work with a film-like saturation on every project.

In the meantime, the free "Film Density" DCTL might help for some tasks, it's on Github from Paul Dore.
