Dropped Frame / VFR Render Option

PostThu Oct 19, 2023 11:38 am

Hi,

Frequent user of the Blackmagic Pocket 4k and 6k for live events. Because they are live, we turn off the 'dropped frame stops recording' option. A dropped frame here or there isn't an issue for us and we'd rather have the extra resolution and occasionally have 59 frames rather than 60.

However, Davinci Resolve has a very bizarre way of handling this, especially given that the footage comes from Blackmagic's own cameras. It seems to see the missing frame as 'media offline' and flashes up the media offline graphic for a single frame. I understand the need to flag to the user that a frame has dropped, but it would be great to have an export option to simply frame double when this occurs, which is what we end up doing anyway. Most people never notice it, especially at 60fps.

The feature can be off by default to ensure people still spot dropped or offline frames when necessary. But this simple fix would sometimes save an hour of work and the nightmare of delivering a project with a flashing media offline frame when you missed one in a two-hour recording.

A quick search online suggests that people have been complaining about this for years in various forums.

Thanks a lot.

I thin the better solution to this problem is to use media that won't drop frames at the required settings.

I vote no.

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I remember seeing someone from BMD saying that the Frame Replacer plugin in Studio is useful for this exact scenario.

Based on Resolve's current handling of VFR media (namely audio and video falling out of sync), and that a fix for this issue already exists, I also vote no... until VFR media is handled better.

Frame doubling in particular will likely get called out by QC, as will offline frames that make it through "Stop renders when a frame or clip cannot be processed.", so it should be an option much like "Stop renders..."

Crazy idea: what if you shot at 30fps instead of 60fps? If you're just posting videos to YouTube, trust me, nobody will be able to tell the difference. And you'd be shooting half as much media, requiring half as much space.
