Timeline indicator for zones with no video clips

As the titles says, i would love to be able to activate such an indicator, sometimes on large projects i move/delete by mistake a clip from the timeline and i have no idea about it until i render everything and somebody watches the file.

Having a colored small line above just like the rendered clips have would be a good addition to the program.

I'm crazy: I always watch the session once before rendering it out. Granted, it might be double-speed, but I don't blink and it's rare that I miss any problem.

I developed a workflow to find empty spots super easily when having to deal with bad AAFs and incompetent editors.

add a new track, add a solid with a very vibrant clip color line lime, set the duration to be the entire timeline

now select all clips and drop them in that same track and back to a different track. all the gaps should leave the solid untouched.

You can do this in a duplicate timeline and copy over the timecodes

Both posts above are valid points but they are workarounds to a simple and non intrusive option to the whole thing.

I usually playback many times what i have already edited behind but i have rare occasions where i mess up!

I don't think that's crazy. I think it's...required.

While I have no issue with the idea in this request specifically, if we were given the chance to vote on priority, I'm not sure this one would ever get done.

I'm with you on this one, Marc!! It's a bloody sad day when watching down the timeline is considered a workaround!

Call me crazy, but I miss printing to tape for this exact reason! The assemble edit was a high-stakes final watch down to catch any mistakes that might've been missed. The clients would have their notes from the layback and I'd have mine and we'd work our way through both lists making insert edits for any last minute changes or fixes.

Now with file exports I try to replicate that process by doing a play down with client prior to exporting, but for some reason the stakes never feel quite as high!

The idea of exporting any kind of master without a final watch down is genuinely terrifying to me.

As far as a mechanism for catching this without watching down goes, maybe a better way of showing this would be a new event type in the Edit Index so you can quickly jump to any gaps in the timeline?

there is a workaround possible

1) duplicate the timeline
2) use the [delete gaps] feature on the duplicated timeline
3) compare the duplicated timeline with the original

it will tell you where the timelines differ (and potentially where a gap was...)

You're right, sorry! I get frustrated when people engage under the assumption that the way they use the software is how everyone else uses the software but that's exactly what I did here. I totally accept that a news environment is not always conducive to a QC pass!!

I still think Edit Index would be the best place to introduce something like this rather than adding more colored bar indicators to the timeline. They could just add "show timeline gaps" as an option next to "show through edits."

In lieu of that, Sven H's suggestion is pretty clever and fast. I've definitely filled that away in the noggin in case I ever need it.

Are you really cutting news in Resolve? I'd love to see a case study on that!! Everyone here is still using Media Composer with the NewsCutter option AFAIK.
