Multicam “open in timeline” syncs timecode

PostSat Feb 10, 2024 12:11 am

When working with multicam clips in a timeline and you right click->Open In timeline, DR takes you to the multicam clip but puts the playhead wherever you last had opened the multicam clip.

What would be helpful is to have the option to open in timeline and have the playhead set at the correct position you were at in the parent timeline (ie at the same frame).

The workaround I have at present is to enable timecode overlays in the viewer, note it down, then once in the MC clip, navigate to it. That's too manual for my liking. Making the parent timeline start with the same TC of the MC clip helps to a point because then you can go to the view and copy timecode, then paste into the MC clip to get you there, but as soon as you start editing down in the parent Timeline, the TCs will be out of step.

Huge +1

There's another workaround in the thread that Jim Posted using the Swap Timeline and Source Viewer function. It's faster than copying and pasting, though not as intuitive as this feature request.

An alternative workaround that I've found for anyone interested:
- Map the "Match Frame to Source Clip" function to a hotkey of your choosing if it isn't already. This is different than just the "Match Frame" function because it matches to the underlying source footage within the multicam clip / compound clip / nested timeline instead.
- That frame, from the original source footage, will show up in your Source Viewer.
- Now select Open In Timeline on that clip to reveal its timeline, then click on your Source Viewer so it is the active panel and press that same hotkey for "Match Frame to Source Clip" and it will move the playhead to the first time that frame shows up in the timeline. You can keep pressing that hotkey to cycle to all the instances of that frame in the timeline in case the clip is duplicated.

In general these Match Frame and Match Frame to Source Clip functions work two ways. If the Timeline is the active panel, then it will match that frame to the source clip in the Source Viewer. However if the Source Viewer is the active panel, then it will attempt to match that frame to where it is used in the Timeline.

Hopefully this helps someone in the meantime!
