Add searching across all effects in the effects menu

PostMon Mar 18, 2024 2:26 pm

In the media pool, we have a "Master" container which allows you to search for content in all subfolders.

In the effects menu, there are 3 separate top-level folders. This means that you cannot search across all effects at the same time.

A simple example of where the current UX lacks is when you wish to add both an OpenFX and Fusion Effect to a clip. Rather than simply searching for each, you need to both search and select the correct effects folder.

My request is that a global search across all effects be made possible.

Two possible ways to achieve this could be:

- Adding a toggle to search effects globally.
- Adding a new top-level "Master" folder containing all currently existing effect folders (Toolbox, OpenFX, AudioFX). See below discussion - this seems more contentious.

Edit 25/03/24: Updated to clarify the request

Update:

Looks like global searching of effects is available in Resolve 19 beta! Thank you so much, BMD. This is a great addition.

I'm seeing three "Master" folders. Toolbox, OpenFX and Audio FX. Searching in one of those seems to work fine in Studio 18.6.5 on Windows.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

To clarify, my request is for these three folders to be within a "Master" parent folder themselves.

As it stands, you cannot search for effects across all effects - search only shows results within whichever folder you currently have selected. This is only a minor inconvenience, but an inconvenience nonetheless.

Beyond being a small quality of life improvement (which in and of itself I would find meaningful), this would allow simple macros to search for individual effects no matter where they reside. If it were added, I would set up keybinds to instantly search for many commonly used effects at the press of a button (and possibly even apply them to a selected clip).

Not a fan of that. (Not a fan of the Master in the bins, either. Let ME choose the top level folder.)

I vote no. Keep it as is.

Why search every time? Save them as Favorites.

In that case, an alternative solution could be a configurable scope for search. My issue is primarily the inability to search all effects. This is, in my view, a rather fundamental feature.

Regarding favourites: I do use them, but they are constrained by screen space. I only favourite a handful of effects I use most often.

I vote YES.
Currently it is inconsistent with the media bin behavior and its GUI design.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

I think the separation makes sense, but +1 to the scope option in search to allow searching of the toolbox, Open FX, and Audio FX.

Thanks for the replies! I have updated the original post and title to more clearly describe the request, and offer both a top-level "Master" folder and configurable search as possible solutions (given the contentious nature of the former).
