"Delete file(s) from disk" from within Media Pool

PostWed Mar 20, 2024 6:40 pm

A simple way to delete a file from Resolve and from the disk in one go from within the media pool in the Edit page or within the Media page.

That is a disaster waiting to happen.

I think all ability to delete anything from the hard drive that Resolve didn't not itself create should be fully removed from the software.

File management should be done with a File Manager, not the NLE.

I vote no.

On this one I agree with Jim. Happens from time to time!

It can already be done in the Media page (but only on the Media page) and with a warning larger than one you'll see in the O.S. Right click the clip and select "delete permanently". This has been possible for years and yet the sky hasn't fallen.

No piece of software can accommodate every fear and contingency. And there's a limit to how much anyone can look to the software for protection against, well -- oneself. How much inconvenience should be demanded of others, to satisfy somebody else's notions about what an NLE should or shouldn't do?

It could be added to a right click on a file in the media pool, with a warning.

You're not on the Media page, which is the only place it will work. Clips can't be permanently deleted from the Edit page.

Guys, this was already litigated in an earlier thread, with comments from staff, which showed no interest in eliminating the feature. It's existed since Resolve versions were in the single digits. And somehow catastrophe was averted. The fact that folks here don't even know it exists suggests you'd have to be truly determined to mistakenly erase your footage....

Next thing we'll hear is, a computer running Resolve must not run anything else, and therefore the OS shouldn't allow media file deletions either....

Not quite right, While you can delete a file from Resolve from the media page (in the file manager only) this is not what they're asking for, they would like to delete and remove it from the disk and Resolve within the media pool.

I would never work this way myself but I can see the benefit of that as a feature, if you are someone who only stores (archive) the files used within a timeline/project on completion of the project, then using the in-use markers in media pool and selecting the ones without use markers and deleting them could be a powerful feature, or better still a "Remove and Delete unused media" (with a nuke warning sign and siren for the faint-hearted)

And we have the Triple Crown: I agree as well. Bad idea to permanently delete from inside Resolve.

What are the advantages of permanently deleting files from within Resolve vs. just doing a Media Manage to a new drive? Once you're sure the Media Manage is good -- which leaves behind all unused drives -- THEN you can make space on your other drives. That's very surefire.
