I'd like to see some form of a "timeline proxy" feature, where you can assign a standalone movie file to a specific timeline as a "timeline proxy", and while the timeline proxy is enabled for that timeline, Resolve plays back the timeline using the "proxy" movie file, instead of from the timeline clips themselves.
Basically, I'd like to be able to do what Offline Reference Clips currently do, except in the Program viewer.
My use case for this is that I'm working on a longform project in which the delivery requirements call for multiple masters, each with different burned-in language subtitles (the subs have to be burned in, because the client is very particular about the typography of the subs). I graded in a textless master timeline, then nested that timeline into different export sequences, each with different subtitle tracks.
The motivation for this request is that Resolve's caching system is so volatile, that I constantly find myself needing to re-cache the entire textless timeline for one reason or another because the cache randomly invalidates itself. If it were possible to simply render the timeline out to a ProRes file, then tell Resolve to use that file as a self-contained "proxy" for the entire timeline for playback and rendering purposes, it would save a lot of time and headaches when dealing with workflows like this. It would also make the Resolve project much more portable, for example if I send the DRP to an remote assistant, they can just open the project on their end, link the "timeline proxies" just like any other Media Pool source, and then immediately start exporting deliverables, without having to waste time re-caching the actual clip grades on their end,
Adobe After Effects has had this feature for over a quarter of a century now, and it's a godsend when working with resource-intensive timelines.
Or perhaps a simpler variation of this idea would be a right-click menu option for timelines in the Media Pool, where you can select "Create Timeline Proxy", which would accomplish the same thing without having to manually import and link pre-rendered proxy files?
