Edit in Place

PostSat May 31, 2025 11:23 am

In the Edit page Timeline panel, please add an 'Edit in Place' function for compound clips etc providing the ability to see and edit the contents within the active timeline context. This would be somewhat like doing a controlled 'Decompose in Place' that recomposes automatically (and does not remove/affect any attributes or effects applied to the container.

like opening the "container" temporarily but keep it as compound....

+1 I like it....

and in color, be able to peek inside the compound itself without going in a separate timeline as well...

This makes sense, considering the "Take Selector" feature already does something similar.

Or maybe it opens a stacked timeline view above the master timeline that can be toggled with a keyboard shortcut?

Yes, its odd that there's no option to interact with Compound Nodes in the Color page in the same way as Group nodes in the Fusion page.

Yep, exactly, something operating akin to the Take Selector or the (old) Show Keyframe Editor / Show Retime Curve Editor type behaviour.

In place is the key thing I'm requesting here... we can already open compounds into a separate timeline view, so this wouldn't be my ideal choice (tho I presume you're suggesting something like v20's 'Keyframe Tray', where the compound's stacked view would be hard linked to the main timeline view).

+1000!

It's awkward trying to hop back and forth right now when coloring clips that are in compound clips. I try to avoid using them, but sometimes it's necessary. I'm sure there is a nice clever way to improve the experience of jumping in and out of those more quickly.

Being able to "step into" compound clips on the color page would save me a lot of time.

It's less important for me on the edit page as we can already "open in timeline" but I can see the benefit of editing "in context" of the main timeline (i.e. music SFX hits, etc.)

How would ripple deletes that move main timeline clips into the "area" of the temporarily decomposed compound clip be handled ? Also, what would define the "end" of this area for undoing the decompose.
(I am sure there is a good answer- just had some random thoughts.)
