project issues with all beta versions with DR18???

PostTue May 24, 2022 1:44 pm

what do you do when it appears to be a problem with a specific project? one particular project keeps freezing on me and it just started doing this since DR18 released. all versions have the same issue. but not on my other projects. and when I reverted back to the last version of DR17, my database wouldn't connect. so I then had to revert back to DR18. Extremely frustrating. PLEASE HELP!!!

1) had been stated multiple times to always backup both the project and the database BEFORE upgrade. once you do upgrade the database, you're out of luck, there is no turning back.
2) backup the database, import it back and rename it [database_name_v18] so you have a copy
3) do the optimization of the new database at that point and see if alleviate the issue.

does the freeze allow you to at least open it, or you never get it to open at all?

also, can you right click to the database and export it? then load it to someone else to see if we can open it? (we don't need the media)

So I did back up my database on DR18 before going back to 17.4.6. and Needless to say DR17.4.6 wouldn't allow me to reconnect my database. I didn't know that you couldn't go back. Luckily I was able to go back to DR18.

The freezing just locks the screen up. I can still click around but the source monitor screen stays frozen. Then after that Resolve just won't properly close out so I have to force close it.

There is likely a path back:
  • Open DR18 and right click on the "problem" project and "Export Project" as a DRP file.
  • Launch DR17 and create a new DR17 database
  • Import the DRP into the DR17 database.
There may be some compatibility issues if the project has been modified to include 'DR18 only' changes - but if it originally came from a DR17 - you might be okay.

Even if it has never been successfully opened by 18? Hmmm... this is at least worth a test.

Okay I've verified that Mark Foster is correct - you can't directly use a drp from 18 to 17. HOWEVER I just now tested moving the .db file from the 18 disk database back to a 17 disk database and it worked just fine.

You can extract your project's db folder from:
Windows
C:\Program Data\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\support\Resolve Disk Database\Resolve Projects\Users\guest\Projects\<your project folder>

Mac
MacintoshHD > Library > Application Support > Blackmagic Design > DaVinci Resolve > Resolve Disk Database > Resolve Projects > Users > guest > Projects > <your project folder>

Move this to the newly created DR17 database you've restored in the same path location (<new 17 database location>/Resolve Disk Database/Resolve Projects/Users/guest/Projects/<your project folder>)

Note: If you created a new 17 database and haven't created any projects yet, the /Projects/ folder won't exist yet. Either just create a quick new project in your DR17 home page, or just make a /Projects/ folder.

There is a much more in-depth answer to this posted by Dimitry Kitsov of BMD.

oh wow I missed a lot. does this option allow me to export the new DRP back to 18 once ive created it in 17? and is it possible to have a corrupted project? ive been using this same project for 2 months and no issues til now

I don’t see why not. This should be a way to get you back to where you were in 17 then once there you could backup your projects as drp files and use them in either 18 or 17 going forward.

I can think of at least a few ways this could all go sideways, but the first thing to do is move your project .db and folder(s) back into 17 and see what happens.

Seems like this is a thing to explore further.
One thing I’ve noticed with Resolve over quite a few versions: sometimes it pops up a dialog box - often a File Open dialog - but the window ends up BEHIND the Resolve gui so there’s no way to respond to it. This makes Resolve feel hung and force quitting is the only way I’ve found out of it.

I wonder if this might be happening to you.
