Adaptive mouse pointer doesn't always display proper tool

PostMon May 23, 2022 11:15 pm

The mouse pointer should change to the appropriate tool when hovering over an edit edge.
There are many cases where one must zoom in farther than really necessary. This slows editing down.

Here's a video illustrating the behavior:

There's no clip at the end for you to Trim the In point of, that's why you don't get that icon.

Thanks for the reply Jim.
Curiously when I select with a roll edit and then change the edit type with U, the edit selects red indicating that the clip is present but there’s not enough media to ripple.

I would expect that the final empty space would act like other empty spaces - an infinite slug.

But the most important part of this report is where one needs to zoom in farther before the handles are selectable. In practice this means a lot of zooming in and out when it shouldn’t be necessary. There’s plenty of room to unambiguously pick a clip edge.

You might try the Cut page, see if it's to your liking. You get a full timeline on top, and a zoomed in timeline on the bottom, so you never have to switch views because you get both at once.

Can we stay on the topic at hand?
Which is really that the mouse pointer doesn't always allow me to select clip edges.

Yeah it's not great, Premiere for example allows you to select clip edges even if the clip itself is so small it can't even be seen.

It does with a Zoom level that allows it to work. That's something you'll have to get used to.

Or, learn and use the keyboard shortcuts.

Bottom line, what you're seeing is not a bug. That's just how it works.

How do you know it's not a bug?

And why exactly is it something that people are just going to have to get used to? Both Avid and Premiere do a much better job of allowing you to select clip edges when the gap between clips is small, or when dealing with small clips. Joe is right to bring this up so it can hopefully be improved upon before 18 is out of beta.

Add to this, when there's an badge on the edge of the clip, indicating some kind of clip processing, the pointer also fails to respond when not zoomed in. In/out constantly is no fun. You're "out" for a reason.

Admittedly a presumption based on the behavior being unchanged since version 12.5 when I started using Resolve.

If folks want current behavior to change...

Best practice is to search first, to see if someone already asked. If not, post one idea per thread with a very brief description of the idea in the thread's title.

Jim, I'm not sure what you find problematic with this report. I believe it's sufficiently descriptive.
As for a feature request vs bug - while there isn't a perfect line between the two I'd put this one in the bug category.
