Waveform sync can't handle long audio clip with mult vids

It's not unusual to have a continuous sound clip with several video clips syncing to it at different points throughout the clip. Common in live shows for example. As far as I can tell Resolve can't autosync this.

Here's an example of my attempt to do so:

That feature can only sync one clip per track at a time.

The clip on the lowest numbered track will be the one that stays put.

Video takes priority over audio.

Is there another way to auto sync this case in Resolve?

In Part 3 of the Reference Manual, there is a section called Syncing Audio and Video. Check that out.

Joe - can you sync multiple video to a single audio using the Multicam feature? I haven't tried it but from memory I thought that it was designed to accomplish this (the particular case where you would have a master audio track to which many video with audio would be synchronized). I'm not sure if you would need to use some metadata to tell Resolve that each of the video clips is from the same camera to get this to work as you would like.

When I get a chance I would like to give this a try but I'm travelling at the moment...

Where the v's are video clips (with their own scratch audio of course) and the long a's are the continuous master audio clip. Though of course it should also work if the audio clip were, say, in two pieces.

Multicam wouldn't work for this because it's trying to do this:

If the V's are all from the same camera, they can be placed on the same track. You just have to make sure they all have the same Camera # in Metadata.

Jim, are you saying you can get this to work?

I showed in my video above what happened when I created this situation and tried to sync.
Since I created the situation by simply deleting the middle of a video clip, the metadata all matched - though one would want this feature to work with multiple cameras anyway.

If I may speak for Jim, he is referring to making it work for Multicam - you just need to identify the camera# for all vvvvv clips as being the same and then Multicam can assemble

Oh I didn’t realize that multicam clips in Resolve handle gaps in video clips. I’ll give that a try.

If it works that says to me that Resolve already has code to do the more general case for waveform sync so this is perhaps not too hard a thing to extend to waveform sync in general.

I wrestled that problem to the ground recently in Resolve 17.

I had continuous audio from a 2 hour interview, but in 4 separate files and Resolve couldn't produce a good synch.

After I rendered the 4 audio files into a single file, Resolve was able to create a properly sync'd multicam clip with many short videos from one camera, several from another and continuous videos from 2 more cameras based on the scratch audio on each camera. I simply put all the media in a bin and selected "create multicam clip from selected media" from the right click menu on the edit page.

You can get a similar result if you have timecode, so that is very definitely worth (gently) insisting upon for the production crew.

The clips can all be laid out to match timeline timecode, so that a clip that starts at 1:10:12 will be placed at 1:10:12 in the timeline.

Select the clips, right click:
