Resolve 18 and AMD drivers

PostThu Jun 30, 2022 12:56 pm

Somebody at BMD can look who's to blame?

The latest driver than can properly encode with GPU acceleration for AMD GPU is the 22.5.1, the 22.5.2 and the new 22.6.1 when selecting AMD instead of Native, Resolve instantly crashes.

I don't have Resolve 17 installed so i cannot confirm if the drivers work with that or not.

In general to avoid follow up questions please provide HW/SW info in your message or keep your signature up to date on related parts to the problem.

It's not crashing for me:

No crash with:
Ryzen 2700x, AMD RX5600XT
Adrenalin 22.6.1
Win 10 pro

Maybe it helps if you use the addtional option "Factory Reset" (Optional) during the installation process.

The system is

5800X
6800XT
32 GB RAM
Windows 11 21H2 Build 22000.778

Tested drivers Adrenalin 22.5.1 / 22.5.2 / 22.6.1, only the 22.5.1 works with Resolve 18 Beta as AMD renderer .. the other two you are forced to chose Native.

I have latest AMD driver for mine and no problem. DR18.5 beta and Windows 10 64-bit. Maybe it is the Windows 11?

I would start by installing with factory settings checked, or using DDU (https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/di ... nload.html) or similar to get rid of the previous driver install.

No experience with W11 so it may be a contributing factor also.

Already done that. It might be a Win 11 issue since there doesn't seem to be an issue with Win 10 users.

I must add that my Windows 11 is Home edition and not Pro.

Crashing instantly when I hit export on the newest Resolve Beta with the 22.5.2 drivers, rolling back to 22.5.1 resolved the crash.

I factory reset and even use the AMD utility to completely remove the drivers. I have tested this multiple times having spent almost 1/2 a day figuring it out the first time, and trying again when 22.6.1 was released.

Adrenalin 22.5.2 / 22.6.1 crash Davinci Resolve 18 Beta (have not tried the full release yet)
22.5.1 is stable every time.

Only crashes when I go to render with AMD.

New AMD driver released today 22.7.1 and the same issue as before. It crashes the second you try to use the AMD render option.

The last working driver with Resolve 18 was 22.5.1

Windows version is Windows 11 Home.

Can anybody from Black Magic Design check with AMD to see what's the issue of why no new AMD driver can be used for rendering in Resolve 18?

H265 works, only the H264 render crashes

Anybody from BlackMagicDesing can look into this?

Since AMD's AMF encoders are now using B-Frames again, is it possible that the new crashes for H264 be related to this?

When Resolve can't find your GPU use a Display Driver Uninstaller first then install the driver.

I'm right now stuck on 22.5.1 because anything after that doesn't work with Resolve 18.

Only the H265 encoding works but i avoid that because of compatibility issues with most of my clients.

I always deliver in H264.

Immediate crash to desktop still persists with the new 22.7.1 driver for me as well. The newest driver I can use without crashing is 22.5.1. Can you please look into this @Black Magic?

AMD finally admits problems with drivers and Resolve.

The latest 22.8.1 driver has this written on "Known issues"

DaVinci Resolve™ Studio 17 may crash using AMD encoder on some AMD Graphics Products such as the Radeon™ RX 6900 XT Graphics.

First I would suggest using Windows Pro (not Home) 64-bit.
next I would suggest using the AMD Pro edition driver not the Adrenalin.
Finally I would suggest staying with Windows 10 for now.

Windows Pro gives nothing of use vs Home for editing, just check the build differences.
And for the other two just no! :)

AMD fixed their drivers with yesterday's release

I had already run out of patience a few days ago and bought an Nvidia card. With a mess of post production work on my plate, even with render speed turned way down, crashes were just too common. Now with the new 3070 over the past couple of days, not a single one. Even maxed out.

Do you see an option when you select MP4/265 on the Delivery page for the encoding profile Main10? ..or it has only Main (which is 8-bit)

I had my share of issues with Nvidia drivers in the past.. just roll to w/e driver works. Both companies f k up drivers from time to time! You don't really need the latest driver for a GPU that does video editing .. just use the one that works!
