Revolve 17 Studio very slow and not using GPU

PostFri Jan 08, 2021 12:35 am

Hi!

I am trying to figure out why Resolve 17.0B Build 18 Studio is so slow to load timelines, respond to color corrections and why it is only utilizing about 10% of my GPU. My computer isn't the greatest out there but it should be sufficient for most tasks in Resolve. I'll attach screenshots of CPU/GPU usage both while trying to load a timeline and during rendering. I'll also attach one of my preference settings.

Computer build:
CPU- AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor 3.79 GHz
64gb RAM
GPU- AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT

I've checked multiple times and pretty sure I have all current drivers for the hardware.

*added in case it helps* All project files are on the same internal 1tb SSD but if it matters, Resolve is saved on a different internal SSD. I have my 250gb SSD set up for programs and to run Windows and a separate 1tb SSD that is dedicated to storage of video files I am currently working on.

Thanks!
Chris

Re: Revolve 17 Studio very slow and not using GPU

Just wanted to open exactly the same topic. Finally upgraded to Studio and now trying to optimize my workflow. The main issue for me is slow opening of projects (tested only timelines with 1080p h.264 tracks). It wouldn't be a big issue (takes about 2 minutes) but for other reasons I sometimes need to restart and it slows me down.

My config is very similar: Ryzen 3600X, 16GB, AMD Rx5700XT, fast nvme drive.
Timeline is simplified for test: just 20 mins of 1080p, h.264 video dropped on it, save, restart. GPU decoding selected in settings.

1) 21s - from start to project manager screen
2) 4-5 seconds from clicking on the project to interface load with timeline (but not playable and no thumbnails)
3) cca 70s - till first thumbnail in the timeline shows up and timeline becomes playable

... all this time, my CPU usage (by HWinfo) is about 10%, GPU utilization 0%. VRAM and RAM below 20% unti it loads and then it jumps up to 40%.

Basically I don't know what Resolve is working on and why it takes so much time. Maybe I'm monitoring wrong resources?
- Tried without GPU decoding but results are almost the same.
- Tried saving thumbnails with the project.... same.
- Tried my full project with 2 of those h264 1080p files, an additional audio track, some titles, and a lot of cuts.... total lengths about the sam (24min) and loading time is almost the same! So it seems to be related to total timeline length (or Resolve loading time) and not the complexity of timeline.
- Once opened and loaded, tried going back to project manager, loading another project... it takes about the same time to load that one. Then back to project manager and loading the initial project... this time it's almost instant.

Read many posts with the same issue, they almost always end up with silence. I just can't understand what resources Resolve needs to speed it up, and I don't see it using any resources available either.

By the time post is approved I already have a followup with a few more tests:

1) clip type/length does not matter at all. You can just put the single image on the timeline and stretch it to a 30 seconds length. Results are the same

2) I exported log files in search of some errors, especially near the slowdown areas. Here are the lines I suspect but have no expertise to fully understand:

This seems very long and somehow roughly matches loading delay time:
Code: Select all
[0x00001d08] | GPU                  | INFO  | 2021-01-10 20:17:50,666 | Completed pre-build of basic OpenCL kernels in 59349 msec

Any timeout error does not look ok to me:
Code: Select all
[0x00003520] | UI                   | WARN  | 2021-01-10 20:18:09,710 | CC thumbnail buffer: TIME out

[0x00003520] | SyManager            | ERROR | 2021-01-10 20:18:25,486 | Deprecated SyLibIO Graph Thumbnail request dropped due to timeout

P.S: contacted support with the question

Mirko Vukusic at over 100 views on this post I assume we are not the only ones with these issues. Im far from an expert but in poking around it seems like AMD has the most issues like this but I've not heard a response from support even after messaging them direct as well as from this post. It's frustrating as I really like the new layout on 17 but my computer really seems slow with it in a few areas despite not actually putting much load on the gpu.

This seems to be GPU driver related so we are looking to see if we can work around it or if we just need new driver.

I have the same problem using Intel 1165G7 Iris Xe: same massages in the log file. Most recent driver: 27.20.100.9126

Reported this already in thread: Resolve 17g6 "waits" 5min to load. Included log files can be found there.

Thank you for the follow up. Happy to hear BM is already looking into the issue as Resolve 16 ran great and I love the new features on 17.

Awesome! I hope you guys can find something that will fix this.

Just out of curiosity, I downgraded my AMD 5700xt drivers to the time that I thought I didn't have this issue. So I installed the Sept 2020 release (20.9.1) since I don't remember having this issue back then, and I still had the issue, if not worse this time around. My the clips in the timeline loaded just as fast as always, but media bin thumbnails and timeline viewer visibility and playablilty took over 5 min to load. So maybe it's a 17 beta issue as well as a driver issue, but I do also remember having it the later versions of 16 as well.

Hope this helps! :)

Following the curiousity of Eric above, I installed Studio 16.2.4 on the laptop to see if the problem with 1165G7/Iris Xe is related to the version of Resolve. But the problem does not change.

Hope this helps.

[Solved] It turned out to be an audio USB device connected to my machine, which also brought the ATEM control software to a grinding halt for about a minute after each startup.

For me, Studio Beta 7 is suddenly very slow to load. This is the first version where I have experienced this. It takes 20 sec for the initial splash screen to appear and then almost 1 min for the application to load. After that everything performs as expected. During application load, both my CPU and GPU are under 3%. Here are my logs: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AnBji8O4qinYhItzd1G ... g?e=M0pxso

The latest version of Resolve loads without any delays. However, it takes longer to be able to use the color correction tools. Previous updates did not have this problem. I do not have a GPU card only the Intel Graphics Card.

Is there any updated regarding the fix for this issue? We are now at beta 9 and the issue persists on one year old machine with Radeon RX 5500XT. My daughters old PC with cheap Nvidia card is working smooth. This is really frustrating :/

I have 5700xt card and have had long load times for projects (like 4-5min). But I just discovered the Radeon Pro drivers that are available for some cards (5500 & 5700 I think). So I installed them, and on 17b8, the load time for one of my projects was only 1:30-2min. Still not great but better than 4-5min.

From what I've seen, these drivers are just a modified version of the gaming drivers. It is using some drivers from late 2020 but I'm not sure which ones exactly.

*edit*
The project that I've usually used to test the startups actually took the same as it always has (~4min)

*edit 2*
It definitely has something to do with the start-up process. Once one project is loaded, I can easily and quickly switch between projects with minimal load times (less than 10sec).

Re: Revolve 17 Studio very slow and not using GPU

Hi all,

glad, that I found this thread, since I experience the same behavior on 17b9 Studio as well as with 16.2.8 Studio (I tried different PCs as well)

I just switched from my MacBook Pro to my new Windows computer. I did not encounter any of this on my MacBook, even with 17b9. (And the MBP is way less powerful)

I used BRAW from my Pocket 6k and some Red Raw samples. Every time I load a new clip, activate a new function on the clip, like NR, IS, Color Grading, adding to the timeline or adding titles it hangs for some time. I can see on the Task Manager, that the CPU is idle except 3-4 cores who are waiting for each other:
DR Loading issue3.png
DR Loading issue3.png (131.78 KiB) Viewed 860 times

I added some temporal NR and hit the play button. It takes a while until it starts playing. After this waiting time, I can then adjust the settings without further waiting time.
DR Loading issue2.png
DR Loading issue2.png (922.33 KiB) Viewed 860 times

I hope I'm not mixing things here, but I wonder if this behavior does also affect Deliver, only the CPU is doing heavy work? The GPU is only filling the VRAM.

Something I don't understand is, that this issue seams already to be in DR16. Which was released a long time ago. How can you work with it? For me, it feels like a showstopper and makes it nearly impossible to work smoothly. Which, at least for me, is highly frustrating, since I just bought the Pocket6k and a new powerful PC.

My PC specs:
Win 10 Pro
64GB RAM
Ryzen 9 3950x 16c/32t
RX 6800XT 16GB VRAM
NVME Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1 TB

Am I doing something wrong? Please, let me know if there is anything I can check or change.

Thank you!

This is the same sort of issue I'm having. It started out with just really long project load times (4-5min) but now I've started realizing that other things are really slow as well. Previewing effects, coloring, and many other things take many seconds (15+) to even register that I clicked or hovered over it (new effects previews) and start to apply. For coloring, once it gets going and gets over some mysterious 'hump' or 'obstacle', then it runs fairly smooth. But every once in a while it'll hang.

Going back to the startup issues I'm having, I saved a Debug Log from the period of time it takes to start up and there are some weird things happening. I don't understand everything, but the weirdest thing I see is an 'Invalid frame number' error. This project is only 4min at 24p, so only about 5,000 frames total, but this error keeps saying: "Invalid frame number 485476387" and "485476388" and "4.85476e+08", over and over and over, along with a bunch of 'Printing Stack Info' numbers in between. Here's an example chunk:

[0x00003930] | BtCommon | WARN | 2021-02-22 10:16:55,417 | Invalid frame number 485476387
[0x00003930] | BtCommon | WARN | 2021-02-22 10:16:55,417 | Invalid frame number 485476388
[0x00003930] | BtCommon | WARN | 2021-02-22 10:16:55,417 | Invalid frame 4.85476e+08
[0x00003930] | BtCommon | WARN | 2021-02-22 10:16:55,417 | Invalid frame 4.85476e+08

So, these are probably simple calculations for a computer to do, but this, along with all the other error messages seem like they would bog down the startup process. Also, a good 50% of the startup log lines are warnings and errors. Hopefully the devs are still looking into this issue like they said they were earlier.

I updated to the release version of DR Studio 17 today. No change.

After I updated to the latest AMD Driver 21.2.3 it worked.
