Playback jittery on the edit page, smooth on the CUT page

PostFri Jan 15, 2021 11:49 am

Hi folks,

I am creating a short video with footage shot on Mavic2Pro drone and BMPCC6k. I have been working with the project for two days and everything was working fine--pulling selects, using CUT, EDIT and COLOR pages--until this morning.

After finishing a rough edit, I added a second audio track and inserted a simple .mp3 music file. All of a sudden, the playback became extremely jumpy. I double-checked: on the CUT page timeline plays smoothly, the music plays, drone footage properly references proxy files, but as soon as I move to the EDIT page all hell breaks loose.

Playback indicator mostly stays in the green and 25fps, with an occasional drop to about 23-24. Task Manager shows about 20% CPU usage, 3-4Gb of RAM, <10% of GPU and Very high power usage.

Now the horrible part - stats about my setup, as everyone's differs:

  • pretty new, powerful WIN PC;
  • Intel I9 9900, 32GB ram, 3.1 USB disk, Radeon Vega 64, Samsung EVO Pro SSDs, ...;
  • Davinci Resolve 17 Studio Beta;
  • 1080p timeline;
  • "Load all timelines ad startup" turned OFF;

The thing is - everything worked fine in the morning until I added the music track. Any ideas? I am pulling my hair out; every single time I decide to give Resolve a shot over Premiere, wome weird issues like these crop up :'(

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE:

I tried:
  • removing the audio track -> no effect;
  • changing timeline back to 5.7k -> EDIT page fps dropped to about 3, on the CUT page it plays smoothly???;

Update 1:

I reinstalled Davinci Studio 17, and now I am experiencing this issue . Even though the timeline resolution is 1080p, the footage plays great on the CUT page, EDIT page is unusable.

Don't fret, you're not alone. Weirdness like this happens to me all the time. One minute everything is fine, then do something, and next thing you know, performance goes to hell. And true, the CUT page seems to always be faster than the EDIT page: BMD has hardware to sell! I'm not blaming them for optimizing the CUT page, I am starting to get used to it as it performs well, and is even better suited to some tasks than the EDIT page, it would just be nice if they worked out the bugs on the EDIT page as well so we wouldn't have to do a face-palm so often.

I was having the same problem. Playback was only stuttering on the edit page. The cut page and the color page both had butter smooth playback. I found your post and noticed that you mentioned the issue only began when you added an mp3 file to the timeline. Based on that, I began playing around with my audio settings and found that the issue went away as soon as I changed all audio clips on the timeline from stereo to mono.

I know you said the issue remained even when removed the mp3 from the timeline, but you might want to check and see if you have any other audio clips formatted as stereo and try changing them.

Ok I'll give it a shot. But... why would I not be able to use stereo audio :( ?

Turns out I was wrong about my fix. Now it seems like it doesn't matter if my clip's audio is stereo or mono, but changing it from one to the other sometimes fixes it temporarily. I'm not sure, but it seems like resizing the vertical width of the audio track is maybe what triggers it to go all stuttery again.

This is definitely a bug. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

I was glad to find out that I was not the only person having this issue.

I have figured out what is causing this.

The problem with the Edit page playback has to do with clips that have their video and audio linked. By default they all are. I figured this out when I was doing an L cut and had to de-link the video and audio. All of the other clips were running/scrubbing very sluggishly except for the L cut. At first I thought it had something to do with my proxy files not being used, but mine are half-resolution so you can easily tell that they are being used.

Please try the de-linking. Select both the video and its audio, then right-click and uncheck Link Clips.

I also have another audio track that is playing with the clips. It is a stereo WAV file. I wonder if this extra audio track is a contributing factor.

I am running 17.1 build 24. I was considering going back to the 17 release, but if you have already tried that and it didn't fix it, then I will just stick with my work-around for the moment and try to get a bug report submitted.

Could it be because of this? : https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=134732

Selection follows playhead + "Linked selection" not activated = very hard stuttering during the playback on the edit page.

I wonder if this got fixed in 17.1

I saw the issue in 17 on my edit system, but testing today on my personal system running 17.1, it works fine.

I realize this thread is a year old but wanted to add my findings to it in hopes that it helps.

PROJECT: I had a pretty simple project with 5 audio tracks, mostly 1080p source clips but some 2K clips. 1080p timeline @ 29.97 fps that I had been working on daily when one morning playback on the EDIT page resulted in jittery audio after a few seconds of playback. I could stop the playback and restart it, experiencing the same few seconds of expected audio then never ending jittery audio.

The Fairlight page played without issue and for a while the CUT page did too.

I exported the project to my 13" MBP and it too was jittery which told me something in the project had become corrupt.

SOLUTION: Sadly, I had to start a new project and start fresh.

My system is BMD Resolve Studio v17.4.3 Build 10, running on a i7-12700 CPU, dual 8GB 580 RX cards, 64GB 2700Mhz RAM and twin M.2 drives for scratch and OS.
